Assistant Professor of English (Tenure-Track Position)

The Department of English invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, specializing in early modern literature and culture, to begin in the fall 2020 semester. The ideal candidate will engage with issues such as race, faith, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality, inclusive of English and global contexts. We are interested in hearing of the potential to contribute across academic departments and interdisciplinary programs at Clark, such as the Center for Gender, Race, and Area Studies (CGRAS), as appropriate to the candidate’s specialization. Active participation is encouraged in Early Modernists Unite (EMU), a faculty collaborative at Clark dedicated to fostering interdisciplinary connections in research and teaching and to facilitating awareness of the early roots of persistent cultural and political structures at work in the contemporary world. Successful candidates must be able to teach the department’s introductory Shakespeare course and the first half of the British literature survey, in addition to seminars in advanced Shakespeare studies and the Renaissance broadly construed; the ability to teach some medieval literature is a plus. Ph.D. is required by August 2020.

Clark University is a private, highly selective institution with a demonstrated commitment to outstanding faculty teaching and research. Tenure-track faculty members normally teach a 2–2 load. In addition to providing ongoing support for teaching and research, Clark offers pre-tenured faculty a reduced teaching load in the first year, as well as a semester’s sabbatical after a successful third-year review.
