Description:

The Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin in collaboration with the Seton Heart & Vascular Institute is seeking a dynamic and accomplished leader to join the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care as the inaugural Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery in partnership with Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas and Seton Medical Center Austin.

Eligible applicants will be fellowship-trained, and board certified in vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery.

As part of the University of Texas at Austin, one of the nation’s leading research universities, the Dell Medical School pursues innovation in the redesign of healthcare delivery, excellence in healthcare research, and programs in interdisciplinary and inter-professional education. It is the fifth medical school in the UT System and the first medical school established in nearly five decades by a member of the Association of American Universities, an organization of leading public and private research universities. An extraordinary commitment of resources, both public and private, has already been made to enable the development and success of the Dell Medical School. The School is partnering closely with the community and regional healthcare providers and payers to provide new models for health promotion, healthcare delivery, and clinical care for the community’s underserved population.

Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas is the primary teaching hospital for Dell Medical School and the centerpiece of a new health district in downtown Austin. The hospital is a new facility built, owned and operated by Ascension Seton, a member of Ascension, the largest non-profit health system in the United States. Ascension Seton has played a major role in shaping Dell Medical School’s signature curriculum and research efforts, which include a focus on creating a more efficient and effective healthcare system and training future physician leaders.

Seton Heart & Vascular Institute is a multidisciplinary cardiovascular physician practice of 45 providers delivering care across 11 counties in Central Texas. In addition to Dell Seton Medical Center, cardiovascular services are provided at 3 other facilities with endovascular/vascular surgery capabilities within the Ascension Texas system including Seton Medical Center Austin, the region’s leader in complex cardiovascular care. The physician group consists of providers from all cardiovascular subspecialties including vascular surgery, interventional cardiology, structural heart, noninvasive cardiology (echo, nuclear, cardiac CT, MRI), EP, CHF/VAD/transplant, and prevention.

The Division Chief of Vascular Surgery will be an integral leader in the development and growth of the vascular surgery program, and oversee the clinical, educational and research matters in the division.

Essential Functions:

  • Work with Department Chair, Chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery, and CEO of Seton Heart and Vascular Institute to develop the strategic plan for growth and development of clinical and academic programs related to vascular surgery
  • Oversight and provision of all aspects of clinical care relating to vascular surgery;
  • Collaboration with other vascular surgery faculty on quality and outcomes review and improvement;
  • Work with Associate Chair for Clinical Integration and Operations and SHI leadership in developing new value-based clinical care programs in selected disciplines, both within Vascular Surgery and in collaboration with other Divisions and Departments, both centrally and regionally.
  • Lead clinical care redesign across the care continuum;
  • Oversee ongoing clinical operations, including assignment of clinical responsibilities and call coverage;
  • Hold faculty within the Division of Vascular Surgery accountable to the highest standards of clinical practice and professionalism;
  • Help to build discipline-specific collaborations across health care systems;
  • Ensure clinical quality standards are defined and met, and meaningful and transparent outcome measurement and reporting occurs regularly, including reporting and measurement necessary for hospital/program accreditation and/or physician-level reporting (e.g., OPPE, MACRA);
  • Ensure faculty members fulfill requirements to maintain faculty appointments in good standing and meet expectations for contribution to the educational mission of Dell Medical School;
  • Work with Associate Chair of Education, and Clerkship, Program and Fellowship Directors to integrate educational opportunities in Vascular Surgery into the clinical environment for medical students, residents and fellows;
  • Work with Associate Chair for Investigation & Discovery to develop Research priorities for the Division of Vascular Surgery, and identify extramural funding sources;
  • Identify, prioritize and integrate research opportunities into the clinical environment for students, trainees, faculty and both internal and external partners;
  • Review faculty appointment requests, conduct initial evaluations and make recommendations for appointment to the Department Chair;
  • Regularly evaluate members of the Division across all three mission areas (including seeking input from other faculty members/collaborators as needed), and make recommendations to the Department Chair regarding academic promotion;
  • Work with the Associate Chairs of Clinical Integration & Operations, Education, and Investigation & Discovery to define strategic goals related to the Division of Vascular Surgery;
  • Mentor and develop faculty in one or more mission areas.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Medical degree from an accredited medical school;
  • Meets applicable credentialing and privileging standards for his/her specialty;
  • Board certification in Vascular Surgery by the American Board of Surgery;
  • Unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Texas (or the ability to obtain prior to appointment);
  • Demonstrated leadership, clinical teaching, and evaluation and communication skills;
  • Ability to influence and motivate others at all professional and administrative levels;
  • Must be an innovate self-starter with a commitment to excellence;
  • Must possess tenacity, self-motivation and initiative necessary to drive the development and maintenance of established and new programs;
  • A track record of being able to lead, direct and influence a team (regardless of reporting lines). Demonstrates behaviors of a team player;
  • Eligible for faculty appointment as an Associate Professor or higher rank in the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at Dell Medical School at UT Austin.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior leadership roles in academic Department and/or health system
  • Familiarity and experience with value based health care payment and delivery models
