About The American University in Cairo:

Job Description:

The American University in Cairo's School of Sciences and Engineering (SSE) seeks an innovative and dynamic leader for the Department of Mathematics and Actuarial Science (MACT) with demonstrated abilities and who will build on departmental strengths, recruit outstanding faculty, promote scholarly initiatives and be an advocate to both internal University and external constituencies. The Department offers a Bachelor degree in Mathematics and a Bachelor degree in Actuarial Science, as well as providing courses in mathematics and statistics to all University majors. The language of instruction is English.

The Department's faculty have diverse interests and expertise. The department is committed to building collaborative partnerships. This is reflected in our recruiting other faculty to the department. Opportunities for interdisciplinary interactions and collaborations exist not only within other departments and within schools at AUC, but also with external professional entities and regional academic institutions. The Chair must be able to provide strong leadership and promote a powerful vision for the advancement of the department's mission and goals. The department is seeking to increase its stature and reputation while maintaining its culture of instructional excellence. The Chair will be responsible for working effectively with the department's faculty in an open and participatory manner, with an eye towards innovation and faculty development. In collaboration with the departmental faculty, the Chair will oversee recruitment efforts, assist in the development of curricula, make recommendations to the Dean regarding all personnel matters including evaluation of faculty and staff, and administer all departmental budgets.


  • Degree Requirements: PhD in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Statistics, or related fields. The area of specialization is open
  • Record of accomplishments at a four-year college or university
  • Associate or full professor
  • Evidence of administrative experience in a higher education setting (center, department, program, director graduate studies, etc.).
  • A strong record of externally funded and recognized research
  • Record of teaching effectiveness and mentoring of students including graduate students
  • Record of involvement with national/international professional organizations
  • An ability to work productively with faculty and students from diverse backgrounds
