The Department of German Studies at Gettysburg College invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor of German Studies beginning August 2020. Area of specialization is open, but the ideal candidate will be able to offer a course that explores the themes of inequality, power, privilege, and/or social justice with respect to marginalized groups in and around German-speaking countries (Conceptualizing Diversity Requirement). The teaching load is three courses each semester and includes all levels of language instruction and at least one content course. Participation in departmental governance and activities is required.


We seek an outstanding teacher who is able to relate to and inspire undergraduate students. A Ph.D. in German Studies or a closely related field by the time of appointment is preferred. Native or near-native command of German and English, evidence of teaching excellence, and an active research agenda are essential. We strongly encourage applications from candidates who can demonstrate through their teaching, scholarship, or governance that they can contribute to the diversity and inclusive excellence of our community.
