Description:

The Department of American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a tenure-track position in Digital Studies with a focus on the historical and contemporary U.S. (rank: assistant professor or associate professor). The successful candidate will be an interdisciplinary scholar whose work engages digital technologies and media within broad social and cultural formations. We welcome candidates whose work examines the digital realm, such as the social and ethical dimensions of the Internet, cellular networks, social media, and gaming, as well as practitioners of Digital Humanities, who can engage and train students in digital tools, such as, but not limited to, data computation, analysis and visualization; text encoding and digital editing and archive creation; digital storytelling; and GIS mapping. Those whose scholarship interrogates issues of race, gender, sexuality, class, and disability, and who have experience working collaboratively, are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidate must demonstrate commitment to both undergraduate and graduate education, including serving as a mentor, research supervisor, and curriculum developer. We seek someone who can teach innovative courses, both broadly general and on specialized topics, in Digital Culture and Society and in Digital Methods. We also expect candidates to be able to teach Introduction to American Studies, a required lecture course for departmental majors.

Qualifications:

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. (by August 15, 2020) in either American Studies or related humanities field; provide evidence of excellent teaching; have an established publication record; and have the potential to supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students at a large research university with an increasingly diverse student body. We also will prioritize candidates who have an interest in public-facing work, and who are seeking a deep engagement in the life of a small but vibrant department.

Application Instructions:

Applicants should submit the following items via Interfolio: A cover letter with description of teaching and research interests; a CV; evidence of teaching excellence (e.g., course syllabi, student evaluations); writing sample (preferably no more than 25 pages); link to website and/or digital portfolio; and arrange for three confidential letters of recommendation to be submitted through Interfolio. The deadline for submission of applications is November 15, 2019. Questions about application submission should be directed to Stephanie.kaufman@austin.utexas.edu.
