The School of Education is now welcoming applications for an Academic Advisor who will advise students in the School of Education (SOE) on academic programs, curriculum, school and university academic policies and procedures focused on fostering their retention by developing, implementing and monitoring a holistic academic action plan for success. The Advisor serves as the primary point of contact for licensure questions and assistance. The Advisor will work under the direct supervision of the Senior Director of Academic Advising & Student Success and is responsible for building relationships with students by providing holistic, career oriented, and developmental advising and support for students in the Teacher Education licensure, bachelors, minors, certificate, BAM and Masters programs provided by the School of Education, including advising for prospective transfer students. This position contributes directly to the goals and mission of the SOE.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will BeAdvise Teacher Education licensure, graduate, bachelor, minor, certificate, and BAM students in the School of Education, as well as prospective transfer students into the SOE programs.
  • Advise current and prospective education students regarding the complicated nature of licensure requirements and academic policies and procedures; provide accurate and personalized degree and/or licensure requirements; and connect students with appropriate support services to ensure student success.
  • Guide current and prospective students in clarifying and understanding their abilities, interests, values and goals and applying that self reflection to their educational aspirations through attainable academic pathways and future careers.
  • Monitor academic performance: discuss logistical, programmatic, and academic concerns that would prevent student success as well as identify exceptional students for recognition.
  • Determine student teaching eligibility, and guide students through licensure process for both the School of Education and the student’s primary college.
  • Evaluate prospective students’ academic records (both high school and college) and recommend appropriate action plans, courses and course sequencing, or admission into the program based upon that evaluation.
  • Prepare and deliver effective academic presentations for first-year BA, and Teacher Education licensure orientation programs, as well as in-class presentations as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed records of all advising contacts, ensuring strict confidentiality of academic records.
  • Remain updated and apply state rules on licensure and funding (e.g. Colorado Department of Education and Colorado Department of Higher Education) when advising students.
  • Collaborate with Advising departments on campus on best practices (e.g. Advising Council, First year network, and New Student Welcome).
  • Work with campus wide partners to share information and build relationships among the campus wide advising community and disseminate campus information to the team in the School of Education.
Application Processing for IUT and graduate students
  • Manage the application process for Intra-university applications and graduate licensure applicants, working with all appropriate SOE and CU Boulder partners.
  • Evaluate licensure application transcripts and update admissions materials for admitted students.
Student Support Services
  • Manage application website for IUT applications and advising materials for Teacher Education licensure, bachelor degrees, minors, certificate, and BAM programs.
  • Explain processes and procedures for program forms for education students; distribute, collect, process, and track forms and inform students of decisions, update data in student information systems as appropriate. Process academic programming, deferments, and withdrawals for all Teacher Education licensure students, updating data in student information systems as appropriate.
Recruiting and Admissions
  • Attend CU Admissions events for prospective and admitted students as needed in collaboration with the Director of Admissions.
  • Attend Advisor Day and other information sharing events on campus as needed.

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Two years of progressive and professional level experience advising in a higher education setting.
What We Would Like You To Have
  • Masters degree in education or related field.
  • Four years of progressive and professional level advising in a higher education setting. Working knowledge of education licensure requirements.
  • Experience working with SLATE, Campus Solutions, and expert knowledge of Excel.
  • Proficient in more than one language.
