DescriptionUnder thedirection of the Chairman, the Optometrist in theLewis Katz School of Medicine’s Ophthalmology department examines eyes andtreats vision problems, usually by prescribing eyeglasses or contact lenses,vision therapy, or rehabilitation programs. They also prescribe medicines totreat some eye diseases and allergies.

 

Responsibilitiesinclude: examining patients' eyes with severalinstruments to help them see how patients react to lenses of differentstrengths; using ophthalmoscopes to allow them to see the inside of the eye andfrom this type of vision care exam can diagnoses ophthalmic conditions such asnearsightedness or farsightedness; prescribing lenses for contacts or eyewear; managingpatients with several eye diseases including macular degeneration, glaucoma,and diabetic eye disease; working with Administrator to develop and analyze thethree optical shops. This would include but not limited to: DME provider,implementing frame inventory management, evaluating cost of goods sold, vendornegotiations and pricing, and possibly in-house lab. Optometrists insurancecredentialing is limited to those insurance carriers who recognized“optometry”; therefore, the treatment of patients for medical reasons islimited only to those insurers that recognize and reimburse for optometryservices. Those that an Optometrist cannot managed will be referred toophthalmologists who can manage the subspecialty and who perform eye surgery,when needed. Performs other duties as assigned.


Education and Experience:

Graduateof a school of college of Optometry accredited by the Pennsylvania Board ofOptometry. Must have completed four years of college and graduated an optometryschool, which offers a four-year program leading to Doctor of Optometry degree.

Optometristsmust be licensed in PA and pass both a written National Board of Examiners inOptometry examination and a clinical board examination. PennsylvaniaCertificate to use Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents. Experience with contactlens fitting and teaching.

 

Required Skills and Abilities:

*Must befamiliar with patient work-up routines and should be knowledgeable ofdiagnostic tests and equipment.

*Demonstratedknowledge of the principles, theories, practices and techniques of optometricpractice.

*Excellentoral and written communication skills.

*Stronginterpersonal skills with the ability to interact with a diverse population.

*Excellentinitiative and mature judgement in work performance.

*Demonstrateddiplomacy, courtesy and a polite manner in dealing with patients andco-workers.

*Demonstratedability to use Diagnostic equipment such as phoropter, and ophthalmoscope.

*Strongorganizational skills.

 

Preferred:
*Specialization in work with the elderly, withchildren, with the partially sighted, or in vision therapy is preferred.
