DescriptionThe Department of Neuroscience is a basic science department that focuses on cutting-edge research in the areas of synapse development and function, sensory systems, complex behavior, cognitive neuroscience and behavioral neurobiology. The Neuroscience department is supported by funding from the federal government, private foundations, and industry. The faculty within the department are also extensively involved with the Sackler School Graduate Program in Neuroscience as well as teaching within the Medical School.

Under the general direction of the Department Manager in the Neuroscience Department, the Staff Assistant performs office duties requiring initiative and independent judgment. Major responsibilities include providing direct administrative support to the Chair of the Neuroscience Department. Incumbent will act as department resource in answering questions and communicating, resolving problems or directing concerns to appropriate individuals. Other duties include travel arrangements, scheduling, word processing, data entry, and ordering supplies. Is the “face” of the Neuroscience Department and greets all visitors. Compiles and produces documents and reports, proofreads and edits material, may prepare expense and budget reports, maintains databases, and coordinates meetings and events.

QualificationsBasic Requirements:
  • Typically requires a high school diploma/GED and 2-4 years of administrative experience or college degree with 1-3 years’ experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including word processing, editing, graphics, spreadsheet and database knowledge.
  • Bookkeeping or basic accounting knowledge.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree and 1 to 3 year's office experience preferred, strong office coordination, customer service and computer skills as well as excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Professional, strong attention to detail and ability to multitask.
