Job Details
The Division of Dermatology at the Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University, offers outpatient general dermatology services, Mohs micrographic surgery, general cutaneous surgical services, phototherapy, photodynamic therapy, V-beam laser services, and cosmetic services. The division also provides inpatient consultative services for Vidant Medical Center which has over 900 beds, a new pediatric hospital, and a new cancer wing under construction. The hospital provides tertiary care services for the people of Eastern North Carolina, a service population of well over 1 million people. In addition to training residents in Dermatology, the division also trains medical students and residents in a variety of specialties.
Job DutiesFunctions as an assistant to a physician and may possess specialized training in a particular medical field. Provides treatment to minor and routine problems and refers cases that are beyond the scope of practice to a physician or specialist. Performs medical acts including giving medical diagnosis, ordering therapy, and prescribing medications in accordance with regulations. Obtains patient histories and performs physical exams. Orders and administers diagnostic tests. Develops and maintains patient health care and therapeutic plans. Presents patient information to the physician. Counsels patients and provides information on medical condition and treatment.

The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center. Vidant Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.
Minimum Education/ExperienceGraduation from a physician assistant program approved by the N.C. Board of Medical Examiners and “approved to practice medical acts” based on education and experience by the Board of Medical Examiners and two years of experience in the specialty area of assignment; or licensed as a registered nurse by the Board of Nursing and graduation from a nurse practitioner program approved by the N.C. Joint Subcommittee, and two years of experience in the specialty area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
License or Certification required by statute or regulationLicensed by NC Board of Nursing—all degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/EducationThe employee must possess specific functional competencies. Must have thorough knowledge of techniques of interviewing, medical and relevant history taking, principles and practices of general medicine and disease states as they relate to the area of work. Must have considerable knowledge of health appraisal tools, laboratory tests and findings, medical and therapeutic procedures as related to the area of work. Must have considerable knowledge and an ability to plan a regime of care based on assessment and findings. Must have considerable knowledge of available resources and appropriate referral methods. Must have skills in performing clinical functions. Must have the ability to teach and counsel individuals, families, and group in areas of health maintenance, preventative medicine, and care of the sick. Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, and to gain the confidence of patients and families and work effectively with them.

*This position is subject to the Broad Banding Salary Administration Plan. If candidates are not identified at a Physician Extender II level, management may consider candidates at the Physician Extender I level. Pay will be commensurate with applicant’s competencies as well as budget, equity, and market considerations.
