Department General Description of Class:

 
Under direction performs minor repairs and maintenance duties on a regular basis and some caretaking duties in a number of buildings of the University.
 
Typical Duties:
 
The following illustrative tasks indicate the level of skill required, and the extent of responsibility involved in this job.  They in no way limit the incumbent to the tasks indicated.    
 
a) liaises with the appropriate supervisors, such as Building Managers, Supervisors, Deans, as well as staff and students to ensure cleanliness, safety and minor maintenance is achieved in a timely fashion in the residence buildings; b) within established parameters performs minor maintenance duties in maintaining the physical buildings and equipment; such as  minor carpentry, replacing lights, switch and receptacle face plates; repairs and adjustments to equipment and furniture, such as tightening screws and hanging pictures, replacing  screens, windows, tap washers and unplugging toilets; c) performs monthly inspections of building, fire and safety equipment; replaces smoke detector and security alarm batteries on a regular schedule; d) reports on damaged and defective equipment; advises supervisor on repairs required and follows up to ensure repairs are completed; e) cleans and mops floors; cleans residences and related buildings, equipment and surrounding areas; removes garbage; f) properly stores and maintains an inventory of materials and equipment; g) responds to requests of residence occupants and contractors; informs them of any required information and provides them with required supplies or services; h) clears entrance ways to residences of snow and ice, lays salt; i) other related duties as required. 

CampusMinimum Requirements:   
 
Education: High school graduate or equivalent, technical training is desirable.
 
Experience: Several years of related work experience, technical training may be substituted for experience.
 
Other: Physical and technical ability to perform required duties and be able to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions, tact and courtesy in dealing with people, ability to communicate effectively in English (both orally and written), demonstrated ability to work independently and be dependable.
