UC San Diego School of Medicine Center for Community Health promotes health equity in the community through education, research, service and training. We achieve this goal largely through translational research, translating advances from basic science and clinical research into the community. Our Center promotes optimal health in all populations through interventions and research that target behavioral health, chronic disease, and obesity prevention.

Despite a broad body of research illustrating the positive effects of youth-led social change, often times the perspectives of young people are absent during discussion-making processes. The UC San Diego Youth Advisory Council (YAC) aims to correct this omission. Comprised of passionate young leaders from throughout San Diego, the YAC is a group of highly motivated, hard-working, and passionate young people dedicated to improving health for San Diego communities, especially those communities which have experienced historical and systemic health inequities.

Through advocacy and projects planned and led by YAC youth leaders, members work to change the social and environment factors that impact health. YAC members meet bi-monthly– planning projects and engaging in leadership workshops. Young people experience dual roles in these activities, both as expert trainers/facilitators and as participants. During workshops, YAC members collaborate and share experiences working as a professional team in developing innovative approaches and strategies to best serve the needs of their community.

Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the Health Specialist will support the YAC through program planning, coordination, and facilitation at meetings throughout the school year. Emphasis is placed on working with youth to improve access to healthy foods, beverages, and physical activity in a community setting. Will focus on collaboration and partnership building activities with public and private organizations, activity tracking and program documentation, program evaluation, and perspective participant recruitment.

The Specialist will provide assistance to implementation of YAC activities, provide direction to engaged youth, and conduct additional administrative duties as needed.
