DESCRIPTION

Earl Warren College is one of six undergraduate colleges at the University of California, San Diego. Warren College is home to approximately 4,500 undergraduate students who may select any major offered by the university. The colleges are distinguished by their general education curriculum which at Warren encourages both depth and breadth, stresses the relationship between the individual and society. Warren College has created a dynamic, innovative, energetic, and strong team environment and is looking for an Academic Counselor who values this type of workplace.

Under the general supervision of the Dean of Academic Advising, provide in-person and electronic academic advising to Warren College students on the College's general education requirements, UCSD policies and procedures, progress towards graduation, and overall decision-making on academic and career issues. Review and monitor academic records to ensure compliance with policies and requirements. Assist with new student advising and orientation programming.

Develop and deliver advising related presentation and workshops. Review records of graduating seniors for completion of requirements and communicate with them accordingly. Participate on committees within the advising unit as well as various college and campus-wide committees and initiatives. Act as a liaison with academic departments and centralized student-related campus offices; and interact with different constituencies of faculty, parents, and the general public.

~ Occasional weekend and evening work required, particularly during orientations, commencement, and other events as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with academic advising and counseling techniques. Knowledge of multiple majors, colleges, and schools. Excellent counseling and advising techniques, including active listening, interviewing, and referral, and a thorough understanding of their appropriate use in an institutional setting and with a knowledge of theories and principles of institutions of higher education.

  • Thorough knowledge of college/school policies, procedures, and requirements. Ability to independently analyze, interpret, apply and explain a variety of broadly defined college, departmental and campus academic policies and procedures including course articulation. Ability to meet University and department standards for attendance and embrace and follow the UCSD Principles of Community.

  • String skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving. Strong skills and abilities in problem solving and conflict resolution with the ability to exercise sound judgement, tact, cultural sensitivity, and diplomacy.

  • Excellent skills in evaluating academic data and academic records and make analytical decisions and determine course of action within established policies and guidelines as appropriate.

  • Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems. Skills in identifying needs, concerns and problems of groups and individuals and take immediate and appropriate action to provide support and guidance.

  • Experience in program development/event planning, implementation and assessment intended to meet the needs of target populations; with ability to organize and conduct meetings, panel discussions, programs and workshops.

  • Proficient skills in using office computer technology for word processing, email and student tracking and monitoring systems (including MS office applications, internet technology and web based systems). Ability to update and maintain those skills as required.

  • Excellent personal and interpersonal skills with ability to communicate in a professional manner, meaningfully and effectively, both in written and oral form, to students, faculty, staff, and parents.

  • Ability to work as a team member integrating functions with those of other staff members. Demonstrated ability to provide effective training and work direction to new staff members and student staff.

  • Ability to work under pressure, organize and prioritize with frequent interruptions while performing multi level tasks. Skill in working independently and exercising sound judgment, tact, and diplomacy in dealing with a diverse population.

  • Ability to identify issues and information requiring confidentiality along with related University policies, and the ability to maintain that confidentiality.
