Job Description Summary:
The full-time Clinical Nursing Instructor will provide application of techniques, skills, and abilities to a group of students in an off-campus clinical setting. The instructor will act as a liaison between Southwestern Michigan College and clinical sites.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Function as the principal source of instruction in the clinical component of a course, but not as the faculty of records.
  • Delivery of clinical content in accordance with student and patient needs and applicable standards.
  • Provide students with a complete course syllabus that clearly states learning outcomes, assessment and evaluation methods and criteria, and classroom management policies.
  • Provide learning activities that stimulate students of different learning styles to reflect upon, think critically about, and apply course content.
  • Hold classes at scheduled times and follow college procedures when needing to change or cancel class meeting times.
  • Supplement courses appropriately with technology, most significantly the learning management system.
  • Utilize the learning management system's functions, per departmental direction.
  • Help students to use college resources, ranging from the library and tutoring to academic and financial aid advising.
  • Review regularly course assignments and evaluation rubrics/metrics for the goal of improving the learning environment.
  • Provide feedback to the student assignments in a timely manner.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to student concerns.
  • Hold at least five office hours each week, at times and locations appropriate to student needs, during regular academic sessions when having a teaching assignment. Hours must be approved by the chair or dean.
  • Mentor clinical adjunct faculty.

    Required Qualifications:
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
    • Minimum of two years’ experience in an acute care center
    • Unencumbered RN Licensure in MI.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Master’s Degree in Nursing Education
    • Clinical Teaching Experience
    • Licensure in IN. and MI.

    Other Information:
    All applicants must demonstrate the ability to promote active and collaborative learning through a variety of teaching methods, as well as relate to students. Excellent organization and communication skills as well as the demonstrated use of instructional technology are required.
