GROUNDS MAINTENANCE WORKER - SUBSTITUTE


The following position is available as a Classified Substitute assignment for Cuyamaca Community College, Grounds Facilities Department. The assignment is for approximately four (4) months or until the hire of a full-time permanent employee.

The assignment will primarily assist in these tasks:
  • Ground maintenance and landscape duties including planting
  • Repair and maintain irrigation system
  • Outdoor pest, insect and weed control

    SALARY
    CL-24, Step A: $2,945 per month (non-negotiable)

    START DATE
    Desired start date is as soon as possible

    STATUS/ASSIGNMENT
    Temporary/Approximately four (4) months.

    SCHEDULE/HOURS
    Monday - Friday / 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

    SUMMARY:

    Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform general grounds maintenance duties on district grounds including landscaped areas, athletic fields and related facilities.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
    Plant, maintain and mow lawns; trim and prune shrubs, hedges and trees; edge lawns and borders. Water landscaped areas including lawns, shrubs and trees; rake leaves and pull weeds.
    Remove paper trash and other debris from grounds; sweep walkways and parking areas; remove debris from roofs and gutters as necessary.
    Prepare and cultivate soil for planting using fertilizers as needed; assist in pest and plant disease control.
    Assist in sprinkler installation, maintenance and repair work; assist in other maintenance work such as mixing and pouring cement and paving materials and checking manholes for proper operation of water pumps.
    Operate and maintain a variety of grounds maintenance equipment and machines including mowers, edgers, shears, power sweepers, blowers, trucks, tractors, loaders and hand power tools; maintain tools and equipment in proper working condition.
    Maintain departmental area(s) in a safe, clean and orderly condition; assure compliance with established safety procedures and regulations.
    Perform related duties as assigned.
    Provide work direction to subordinate personnel and hourly workers as assigned.

    SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
    Assist in the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields and related facilities as required. Assist in setting up equipment and facilities for special events.

    KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
    KNOWLEDGE OF:
    Methods, tools, materials and equipment utilized in grounds maintenance work. Common plants found in public areas.
    Cultivating, fertilizing, watering and spraying of trees, shrubs and flowers. Mowing, edging and other basic grounds maintenance procedures.
    General safety procedures related to grounds maintenance work.

    ABILITY TO:
    Perform general grounds maintenance duties on district grounds including landscaped areas, athletic fields and facilities.
    Provide assistance in specialized grounds maintenance work. Operate and maintain grounds maintenance equipment.Use assigned methods for control and eradication of plant pests, rodents and weeds. Assist in the maintenance and repair of sprinkler systems.
    Assist in the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields.
    Lift objects weighing up to 80 pounds.
    Understand and follow oral and written directions.
    Work independently; meet schedules and timelines.
    Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Observe legal and defensive driving practices.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
    Sufficient training and experience to perform the required duties.

    LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
    Valid California driver's license and ability to qualify for district vehicle insurance coverage.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:
    Work includes outdoor environment; climbing, stretching, pushing, pulling, and exposure to noise, adverse weather conditions and potentially hazardous chemicals; subject to lifting objects weighing up to 80 pounds.
