The Division of Student Affairs supports the academic mission by educating students as whole persons, promoting their intellectual, moral, spiritual, and social formation; enhancing students' learning and helping to prepare them for lives of discernment, civic engagement, and professional growth; teaching personal responsibility and respect for people of all faiths, cultures, and beliefs; promoting the health and safety of students and others in the University community.

Georgetown's Counseling and Psychiatric Service (CAPS) serves as the university's primary mental health agency for its students and campus community. Our central mission is to collaborate directly with students in overcoming difficulties that may interfere with the definition and accomplishment of their educational, personal, and career goals. Accordingly, CAPS strives to provide students with opportunities to develop greater self-understanding, identify and solve problems, and improve academic performance through the alleviation of psychological, emotional, and cognitive impediments.

The Staff Psychiatrist is a 75% FTE position based on Georgetown's Main Campus. Duties include evaluation of students with psychological problems; prescribing and monitoring medication for psychiatric illness; educating students about their illness and medication, participating in the CAPS on-call system; providing psychiatric consultation services to staff of the Counseling and Psychiatric Service (CAPS) and assisting with the management of psychiatric emergencies and hospitalizations. Work interactions include direct service to students, consultations to deans and faculty regarding student issues, consultations to parents, and consultation to other CAPS staff and Student Health Service staff.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Direct Clinical Service
  • Evaluate and treat students with psychiatric symptoms (primarily diagnosis and pharmacotherapy, and also psychotherapy where appropriate when another therapist is not already providing this service).
  • Provide consultative support to other CAPS clinical staff regarding management of psychiatrically ill students.
  • Consult with parents, faculty and other mental health providers, as needed.
  • Share on call, intake and emergency responsibilities with other staff members.
  • Provide backup coverage for the Intake Coordinator.
  • Maintain case management to ensure that patient dispositions are successfully completed.
  • Document and maintain timely and accurate client records.


Administration, Supervision, Other Duties
  • Participate on committees and coordinate areas of care as needed.
  • Support outreach efforts.
  • Provide supervision for psychiatric residents, psychology associates and psychology externs.
  • Provide or receive supervision as assigned.
  • Participate in continuing medical education and in service education.
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned by the director.


Qualifications
  • M.D. or D.O. with board certification in psychiatry, and licensure in the District of Columbia.
  • Preferred qualifications: College mental health experience.
