Metadata and Cataloging Librarian
The George Mason University Libraries seeks to fill the position of Metadata and Cataloging Librarian. This position is responsible for original and complex cataloging of a wide variety of newly purchased research materials for the general collection, as well as special collections, including print monographs, serials, audio discs, and maps. The Metadata & Cataloging Librarian also serves as the department lead for original and complex copy cataloging of music scores.
This position contributes to the Program for Cooperative Cataloging, for NACO and BIBCO through the Washington Research Library Consortium (WRLC) funnel. It provides general leadership and support to the department for special projects. The incumbent in this position will be expected to stay abreast of evolving national and international cataloging standards; assist in the development and documentation of local policies and procedures; and work collegially within the department of four librarians and eight paraprofessional staff. Incumbent may also participate in data management and record enhancement activities; train and oversee the work of staff; and serve on local and regional, or national library committees as appropriate.
1. Performs original and complex copy cataloging for special collections materials of various forms and formats; works closely with staff in the Libraries’ Special Collections Research Center;
2. Performs original and complex copy cataloging for all music scores in the Libraries’ collections; works closely with the Music and Theater Librarian to support and enhance access to music scores;
3. Performs original and complex copy cataloging of print monographs, serials, audio discs, and maps;
4. Contributes to the Program of Cooperative Cataloging for NACO and BIBCO, creates and enhances authority records, performing related research as necessary;
5. Works collegially with all other University Libraries’ administrative units and distributed libraries; creates and maintains a positive work environment; fosters a climate of equity, collegiality, and cooperation;
6. Prepares and edits policies and procedures, schedules, reports, studies and analyses as needed/requested, for the Metadata Services department;
7. Performs other duties as requested, which fall within the scope of a member of the Libraries’ professional faculty; and
8. May also participate in catalog management and record enhancement activities.
QUALIFICATIONS – Required:
- ALA-accredited MLS degree OR an equivalent certified foreign degree;
- Two years professional cataloging experience in an academic library setting;
- Knowledge of RDA, LC-PCC, LCC, LCRI, LCSH, LCGFT, and MARC21 formats;
- Experience cataloging scores and special collections materials;
- Familiarity with cataloging practices and procedures;
- Knowledge of musical notation;
- Experience working with automated library systems;
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative approach to problem solving and working across organizational boundaries;
- Aptitude for complex, analytical work with an attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills;
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a collegial team environment; and
- Bibliographic knowledge of one or more Western European languages.
- Experience with Exlibris Alma or Voyager and OCLC Connexion;
- Experience with authority control and data management activities;
- Experience creating authority records;
- An awareness of BIBFRAME and other linked data initiatives; knowledge of non-MARC metadata standards; and
- Broad knowledge of music history and music bibliography.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and rank; and not less than $60,000/year.
