Job description


The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Chicago seeks a specialist of Latin American and/or Latinx Literatures and Cultures at the rank of Professor, Associate Professor or advanced Assistant Professor to begin July 1, 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The following fields are of particular interest: 1) Mexican literary/cultural studies, 2) Latinx and Transborder literary/cultural studies 3) Southern Cone literary/cultural studies, with strong preference for candidates also working on Brazil. The normal teaching load for faculty in the Humanities Division is four courses per year, plus advising and committee responsibilities.

The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures houses growing undergraduate and graduate programs in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Studies (HLBS), offering a curriculum that embraces multiple disciplinary traditions and broad theoretical diversity. Our programs highlight the linguistic and cultural diversity of Iberia and Latin America, supporting a rich variety of approaches to the study of literature, theater and performance, the visual arts, and cultural production. RLL offers research and co-teaching opportunities with departments and programs across the University, and our faculty have close intellectual and pedagogical ties to a range of other departments and centers, including Art History, Comparative Literature, Music, Theater and Performance Studies, History, the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality, Latin American Studies, and the Center for Race, Politics and Culture.


We seek a colleague with an ambitious research agenda yielding active and innovative scholarship, who will contribute to the scholarly community of the department and university, and who has the ability to be an excellent teacher in the university’s core curriculum, to offer introductory to advanced undergraduate courses in multiple areas of Latin American and/or Latinx Literatures and Cultures, and to teach graduate courses related to their area of expertise. Only applications from candidates who currently hold a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor or above (or the equivalent thereof) will be considered. The successful candidate will have native or near-native Spanish (Portuguese is also highly desirable).
