Associate Director of Division of Health and Human Performance for Learning, Pedagogy, and Research
Would you like to be a part of a dynamic and innovative team committed to innovating the art and science of human flourishing? The Division of Health and Human Performance (hhp.stanford.edu), which is administratively housed within Vaden/VPSA and academically housed within the Department of Medicine, is hiring a 55% FTE, 12-month position classified as an Academic Program Professional 2 to lead learning, pedagogy, and research across HHP and the Stanford Flourishing Project. HHP houses five academic programs (LIFE, LEAD, WELLNESS, PE, and OUTDOOR) whose collective aim is to educate the whole person for life-long flourishing. Within HHP, the Stanford Flourishing Project is focused on research, innovation and special projects, campus-wide and external partnerships, and convening thought leaders. This position would head research projects focused on program efficacy across HHP, as well as help develop effective teaching and learning strategies that promote well-being and flourishing in measurable ways. Part of this position will include co-instructing and/or secondary instructing signature courses within HHP.
Work under the general direction of the Director of Health and Human Performance (HHP) to develop, implement, and administer the vision, strategy, and goals around learning, pedagogy, and research within HHP and the Stanford Flourishing Project. Participate in strategy development, long-range planning, and campus and external partnership development. Co-teach and/or secondary instructor courses (6-9 units annually) within the HHP Division, including Tools for a Meaningful Life and Living on Purpose, among others. This job is a 12-month position.
Administrative Responsibilities (45-55%)
- Develop, implement, administer, and evaluate programs, including outreach to varied stakeholders by: conducting research activities within the program; analyzing data, creating reports, reviewing trends, and making program improvement recommendations. May develop or contribute to outreach strategy related to program communications, development, partnerships, and fundraising/funding.
- Create and advise in the development of curriculum while maintaining Division and institutional standards. Serve on the Division academic policies committee.
- Outreach to university faculty to build curricular offerings through departmental partnerships and cross-listing courses.
- Contribute to and inform on strategic program planning and related funding and financial sustainability of the Division.
- Manage budgets for both for research across HHP and Stanford Flourishing Project, including operations, revenues, and gift accounts.
- Recruit, hire, and mentor teaching and research staff, as appropriate. Work with human resources to create contracts and offer letters.
- Help conduct annual reviews of teaching staff according to Divisional standards.
- Draft quarterly course load and work with the administrative associate to post class schedules and assign classrooms.
- Facilitate quarterly faculty and academic staff meeting as pertaining to learning, pedagogy, and research. Conduct quarterly one-on-ones with teaching staff. Attend meetings of the Division and key Departmental gatherings.
- Conduct annual audits of courses to ensure they are properly entered into the PeopleSoft system. Work with the administrative associate to correct or update any issues.
- Write and edit complex content for proposals, research grants, peer-reviewed publications, and other program activities.
Instructional Responsibilities (45-55%)
- Co-instruct courses (curricular) and conduct academic experiences (co-curricular) for students of the Stanford community in both traditional classroom and field-based environments.
- Annual teaching load varies depending on course type, between 6-9 units per academic year.
- Position includes formally and/or informally advising students.
Education and Experience
Earned doctorate (in humanities, arts, or social sciences) and three or more years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. ABD will be considered. At least three years teaching experience preferred.

- Basic knowledge of managing budgets and developing financial plans.
- Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks.
- Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
- Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
- Ability to use voice to present information/communicate with others.
