Assistant, Associate, or Professor of Health Sciences

Job Description:
Department of Health Sciences

Furman University invites applications for a tenure-track position in the Department of Health Sciences to begin in August 2020.

We seek a candidate (Ph.D. or equivalent by August 2020) with expertise in human anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, clinical kinesiology, and/or similar clinical areas. The Health Sciences Department is home to ~300 undergraduate students who desire strong training in courses that will prepare them for careers in medicine, allied health professions, public health, and biomedical research. The ideal candidate will have potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring students who seek to examine the health sciences from a clinical perspective that explores the structural and functional mechanisms underlying human movement across health and disease, using a variety of methods, ranging from biochemical and systems techniques through whole body analysis.

We are committed to hiring a faculty member who will foster innovation in our curriculum, provide a rich and varied educational experience for our students, and enhance opportunities for diversity and inclusion for student success. Teaching expectations will include an introductory course in Research and Evaluation (HSC 201); a comprehensive Wellness Concepts (HSC 101), a course with time divided equally between classroom learning and fitness training that fulfills a general education requirement at the University; and potential to teach courses in the candidate's area of specialization. The candidate must show potential evidence of the ability to teach an undergraduate level research methods course. The area of research specialization is flexible, but will complement existing strengths in the department. The candidate must show potential evidence of teaching excellence and commitment to establishing a productive research program that leads to publication with undergraduates.

The Department of Health Sciences has 15 full-time members and ~300 undergraduate students, the majority of which are pursuing careers in clinical fields and/or public health. Normal teaching responsibilities are five courses, spread over two terms, typically including two or three introductory courses and two or three upper level courses. For further information on faculty, programs, and facilities, visit the department's webpage and consult the university catalog.

Required Documents:

Submit PDF versions of curriculum vitae; a statement describing how your teaching, scholarship, mentoring and/or service might contribute to a liberal arts college community that includes a commitment to diversity as one of its core values; a statement of teaching credentials and philosophy; a statement of research interests and an initial research plan for work with undergraduates; all transcripts; and have three references send their letters of recommendation to the department assistant, Lonita Stegall (lonita.stegall@furman.edu). Review of applications will begin October 15, 2019 and continue until the position is filled.

Questions regarding these positions may be directed to the chair of the search committee, Dr. Matt Feigenbaum, at matt.feigenbaum@furman.edu.
