Stanford University, Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology is seeking a full-time Life Science Technician I to join our laboratory and assist the research team on translational research projects. In our lab we investigate mechanisms of cancer and liver cancer progression through studies of cultured cells, use of transgenic mouse models and also human specimens. Under the supervision of the PI, this technician will conduct experiments to support ongoing projects in the lab. The position includes work with mice and cultured mammalian cells. The successful applicant will become a member of a research team and must interact productively with other members of the team.





Duties include:




  • Perform experiments, including PCR and Elisa and maintain records.

  • Assist in simple mouse experiments under direct supervision. Perform Immunohistochemistry and keep detailed accounts of primary and secondary antibody concentrations and exposure time.

  • General lab maintenance: maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.

  • Maintain record of all the orders in the lab and an inventory of the stock.

  • Deliver samples to core facilities and collect results.

  • Clean equipment used in experiments.


  • Maintain records of all the reagents being used.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:




  • Mature judgment, good problem solving and organizational skills and the ability to attend to detail with consistent accuracy are highly preferred.

  • Understanding of common molecular and cellular biology methods.

  • Prefer excellent manual dexterity to reproducibly perform very simple animal dissection such as removing a readily accessible organ, preparation before and assistance during surgery, administration of medication and post-surgery care.

  • Performing histological procedures involving fixation of tissue and staining specimens with stains that do not require microscopic control.

  • Experience with mammalian cell culture, creation of mammalian expression constructs and recombinant viruses, and quantitative PCR is a plus.







    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):




  • One year's employment experience in laboratory work or equivalent training (e.g., one year of college science).

  • Work requires the ability to follow detailed instructions and keep accurate records.







    UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • May require working in close proximity to blood borne pathogens.

  • May require work in an environment where animals are used for teaching and research.

  • Position may at times require the employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present.

  • Employee must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing and gloves, and possibly a respirator.

  • May require extended or unusual work hours based on research requirements and business needs.
