Summary 
The Executive Director of Development is responsible for the day-to-day operations of development and alumni relations as part of the broader work of the Division of External Relations.  The Executive Director ensures department operations are integrated, effective and efficient in meeting the fundraising and alumni relations goals of the Division and College.

Essential Functions

  • Empower, motivate, and supervise the work of the Development and Alumni Relations team to ensure department operations are integrated, effective and efficient in meeting the goals of the Division and College.
  • Emphasize a team-oriented, systems approach to the work of fundraising that relies on best and next practices, accountability for results, and a spirit of enlightened hospitality
  • Set priorities, goals, and strategies for annual gift programs and department overall in collaboration with the senior leadership of the division.
  • Supervise Director of Advancement Services, Director of Annual Fund, Director of Development and Alumni Relations, Association Development Officer, and Administrative Assistant
  • Provide staff support to the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees and Campaign Cabinet in collaboration with the Vice President of External Relations
  • Lead the Donor Stewardship Action Team that will develop content and systematize the process and timeline for providing annual reports to donors for scholarship and award funds
  • Serve on the President’s Fundraising Action Team, to include the Assistant Vice President of Major Gifts and Campaigns (chair), Vice President of External Relations, Executive Director of Development and Alumni Relations, Director of Advancement Services, and Executive Assistant to the President
  • Work collaboratively with the Assistant Vice President for Major Gifts and Campaigns in integrating strategies for campaigns and major gifts with annual gifts programs such as the Illinois College Society
  • Collaborate with the Director of Development and Alumni Relations on advancing the goals and initiatives of the Alumni Association Board of Directors and engaging alumni
  • Work collaboratively with Marketing and Communications as part of an integrated divisional team
  • Represent the department on and off campus
  • Participate in the institutional leadership group that meets monthly to discuss Strategy Map results and course corrections
  • Develop and monitor the development and alumni relations budget
  • Manage a portfolio of at least 30 donors.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Intercultural competency; ability to work with individuals of diverse backgrounds
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising or in related work
  • Relevant experience in client centric, membership or affinity-driven programs
  • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships, engage in creative problem solving, and extend enlightened hospitality when working with others
  • Demonstrated capacity to be an effective supervisor
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail with a systems-oriented mindset
  • Interest and ability to make data-driven decisions
  • Demonstrated capacity to engage and collaborate with a variety of people to advance high-priority goals
  • Desire to achieve the long-term goals of Illinois College
