The Assistant Director, Distance Learning Institute plans, develops, administers, and coordinates all administrative activities and services of the assigned division. Moreover, the incumbent provides leadership and guidance to department staff to ensure high level of performance, achievement of goals, and quality of results.

Established in 2013, the Distance Learning Institute (DLI) is the DCIE department responsible for the development of online courses, certificates, and other online learning modules. It is also responsible for developing innovative strategies and new online modalities to support, enhance, and advance all DCIE programs and activities, in both domestic and international learning environments. The DLI provides a one stop solution for three fundamental elements of distance education online course/certificate/other modalities development, faculty preparation for online teaching, and distance education research. The DLI creates undergraduate and graduate credit courses, and non-credit courses. The DLI also conducts a variety of best practices and training workshops for faculty.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The Assistant Director:
• Supervises, trains, coaches and mentors training and course design staff as assigned.
• Plans, develops, administers, supervises, and coordinates all administrative functions and services of the Division for Continuing and International Education’s Distance Learning Institute (DLI).
• Contributes ideas and viewpoints to the Associate Dean, or designee, on operational and strategic plans for the DLI.
• Creates distance education courses or coordinate, and/or supervises the planning and creation of distance education courses.
• Creates and takes the lead role of the faculty online training and monthly technology tools and best practices workshops.
• Makes daily independent decisions to ensure DLI objectives are on track and that University policies and procedures are followed.
• Ensures online courses are designed with focus on student achievement using the most innovative and appropriate educational technologies, applied instructional strategies, and instructional design attuned to the educational level and purpose of the specific course.
• Develops and conducts research to inform practice of instructional design in online learning utilizing effective research methods for ongoing assessment to improve student learning experiences, educational technologies, and other learning solutions.
• Assumes lead responsibilities working with the faculty and other program staff to develop the program.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Education Requirements (Essential Requirements):

Bachelor's degree in relevant field required; Master's or Doctoral degree in Management, Education, Instructional Technology or related field preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Ability to lead and manage online course development teams (e.g., instructional designers, academic technologists/content strategists, graphic designers, etc.) to produce state of the art online courses.
• Ability to develop strong working relationships with faculty.
• Ability to express ideas and information, clearly, concisely, verbally and writing. Excellent listening and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with subordinates, superiors, and officials of other departments.
• Demonstrated ability to supervise, train, and evaluate full time and part-time personnel.
• Ability to define problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions to solve problems, develop plans and reports, and plan initiatives.
• Demonstrated ethical behavior, professionalism, leadership and management abilities.
• Ability to multi-task and organize, prioritize, and follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion with an attention to detail.
• Knowledge of trends, developments, and new technologies affecting adult online education.


Work Experience Requirements (Essential Requirements):
A minimum of three years of relevant work experience required including the following:
• Proficiency in the use of a learning management system (e.g., Blackboard, Moodle, Canvas, etc.) including customization of course shells, discussion forums, and assessment tools.
• Proficiency in the use of instructional technology tools (e.g., SnagIt, Screencast-o-matic, Prezi, etc.).
• Fluency in the operations of an online learning environment (e.g., prior experience at an online school/college, etc.) including project management and program development.
