The School of Nursing resides in the College of Health and Human Services (http://www.health.uncc.edu) a multidisciplinary college with ongoing funded research, serving over 600 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs, which include the BSN, RN-to-BSN, MSN, and DNP programs. These programs are supported by 34 full-time faculty, and one Endowed Chair.

The School of Nursing prepares nursing professionals to serve as leaders, clinicians and scholars through a wide range of innovative educational programs to meet the healthcare needs of an ever-changing culturally diverse society.

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals.
Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Associate professor candidates must have a strong academic record, achievement in original research and scholarship, success in securing external funds for research and demonstrated quality teaching. They should also demonstrate an interest in research mentorship with faculty and students.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience

All candidates should hold a Master of Science in Nursing and an earned doctorate in Nursing or related field, from an accredited university. Additionally, the candidate should have at least 2-years of clinical nursing experience, 3-years teaching/mentoring experience with diverse undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty, effective written and oral communication skills, and proven ability to collaborate with others. Must have experience with curriculum development, and experience teaching in classroom, clinical and online environments.

Candidates for Assistant Professor should also have a record of effective teaching, high quality research and outreach, dissemination of published work, appropriate service contributions, as determined by the unit, demonstrated collegiality and interest in interdisciplinary and/or interprofessional activities. Experience in grant writing and successful funding is preferred.

Candidates for Associate Professor with conferral of permanent tenure shall have a continuous and distinctive record of peer reviewed publication and/or peer-reviewed scholarly activity and appropriate external funding, as determined by the SON. The candidate shall have a record of outreach, partnership involvement and community engagement appropriate to the discipline, a record of increasing commitment to service with a level of engagement appropriate to the discipline, demonstrated collegiality and participation in interdisciplinary and/or interprofessional activities.

Necessary Licenses/Certifications

Must have, or be eligible to obtain licensing from the North Carolina Board of Nursing. APRNs must be certified, with approval to practice in the state.
