Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

The mission of the Dean of Students Office is to initiate learner-centered programs and services that foster a culture of care conducive to academic and personal development.

Position Summary

A few of the new functional areas within the Dean of Students Office to be assigned to the Associate Dean/Director include:
1. The Associate Dean is responsible for coordinating the crisis management process for students who have experienced severe distress.
2. The Associate Dean works in collaboration with faculty and other support services across campus to intervene as early as possible with students whose behavior or personal well-being is impacting their academic success.
3. Initiating and implementing advocacy programs and services based on data-driven decisions.
4. Assessing learning outcomes and preparing reports related to student development as well as the impact of educational programs in partnership with campus stakeholders.
5. Advising and counseling faculty, staff, students, and parents on confidential matters and make appropriate referrals when needed.
6. Representing the University on committees and attend a wide variety of student events which included providing outreach presentations, team-building, leadership, and experiential learning opportunities.
7.In the event of a campus-wide or community-wide emergency in which UNCG acts as an emergency command center, the Associate Dean of Students will be responsible for operating the Family Assistance Center.
8.The Associate Dean serves as a member of the University’s crisis response team.
9.The Associate Dean serves as the chief administrator for the Dean of Students Office and the Office to Student Rights and Responsibilities.
10.The Associate Dean is responsible for working with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Graduate School, International Programs Office on the Extraordinary Admissions process.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum requirements are a master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling or another appropriate field of graduate study and a minimum of 5-7 years of applicable professional experience including direct experience with crisis situations, serving in an advocacy role with college students in an institution of higher education; a record of increasingly complex work responsibility; adjudicating complex conduct cases, a demonstrated understanding of student learning and development; ability to achieve results in an environment of diversity and multiculturalism; and excellent interpersonal, communication, crisis response, and conflict management skills. A candidate must have the ability to balance multiple obligations in an efficient and effective way, remain professional and compassionate during emotionally charged situations, and work as an integral member of a supportive team.

Preferred qualifications include a candidate that has successfully served in a crisis and advocacy role for the campus community with a documented record of initiating proactive strategies that enhance retention and contribute to a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Supervision of five professional staff, Office Management and three Graduate students.

Supervisory responsibilities for the Dean of Students Office and the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities.

Train, supervise, and evaluate five professional staff, research and analyze data to identify student development trends and foresee challenges.

Oversee the maintenance of all student advocacy, academic integrity and conduct records.

Oversee the completion of accreditation and compliance reports when necessary.

Essential Tasks

Oversee the implementation of departmental initiatives primarily for students including interpreting policy and procedures, making referrals, and networking with campus and community partners to foster a culture of care.

Fill in for the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students in his absence.
