The hire will join the Oglethorpe faculty only one year after the opening of a newly renovated science facility, the Cousins Center for Science and Innovation. He/she will teach General Chemistry I and II in service to a variety of science majors sponsored by Oglethorpe’s Natural Sciences Division. In support of Chemistry majors/minors, he/she will also teach upper level electives in their expertise (specifically analytical, physical, or polymer chemistry). Preference will be given to candidates prepared to teach courses with an emphasis on computational and theoretical approaches. Candidates will also be expected to teach in Science and Human Nature, an interdisciplinary course for non-majors that serves as the final class of our unique “CORE” general education program.

Founded in 1835, Oglethorpe is a small, highly selective, independent, private university located on a beautiful, 100‐acre campus in Atlanta. Our liberal arts mission serves a diverse student body of 1,350 undergraduates, representing 33 states and 38 countries. The campus is located in Brookhaven, near Atlanta’s well-known Buckhead neighborhood. Oglethorpe’s distinguished faculty is composed of teachers/scholars committed to providing the highest quality instruction to students. Oglethorpe has entered an era of innovation, reinvigoration, and growth evidenced in part by increased enrollment, the addition of the Turner Lynch Campus Center in 2013, and the launch of a capital campaign for the I.W. “Ike” Cousins Center for Science and Innovation, slated to open in 2019. The Q. William Hammack, Jr. School of Business, to be established by the university’s largest-ever gift of $50 million, will also open in 2019. Renowned for its groundbreaking Core program, Oglethorpe is a member of the Annapolis Group, comprised of the nation’s most selective liberal arts institutions, and has been named among U.S. News & World Report’s Best Liberal Arts Colleges, Forbes’ America’s Best Colleges, and Princeton Review’s Best Southeastern Colleges.

Oglethorpe University has a strong commitment to diversity and encourages members of underrepresented groups to apply.

Qualifications Candidates must have, or expect, a Ph.D. in relevant sub disciplines in Chemistry upon hire. Applicants with undergraduate teaching experience and familiarity with innovative teaching methods, such as active learning, inquiry-based methods, and CURE pedagogy will be given priority. In addition to incorporating research experiences in the class room, candidates will be expected to conduct an independent research program involving undergraduates. Candidates with expertise in a subfield of Materials Chemistry that can interface with our existing programs in Computer Science, Physics, and/or Engineering are highly desirable, as are those applicants that can work across disciplines.

To apply, please submit online a cover letter, C.V., statement of research interests, statement of teaching philosophy, and unofficial copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts. Please, also request three (3) letters of reference to be sent to: chemsearch@oglethorpe.edu

Organization

Founded in 1835, Oglethorpe University is Atlanta’s only co-educational small private college, home to more than 1350 eclectic and engaged students from 33 states and 31 countries.

Renowned for the groundbreaking Oglethorpe Core, Oglethorpe's academically rigorous programs emphasize intellectual curiosity, individual attention, close collaboration among faculty and students, and active learning in relevant field experiences. Students connect theory and practice with the help of Oglethorpe’s A_LAB (Atlanta Laboratory for Learning), an incubator for experiential learning through internships, study abroad, civic engagement, and undergraduate research.

Oglethorpe is in an unprecedented era of growth and innovation, evidenced by increased enrollment and philanthropic giving, and new strategic entrepreneurial partnerships and programs. In 2018, Oglethorpe launched Flagship 50, a groundbreaking merit tuition scholarship program that matches all 50 states’ flagship tuition for qualified students. The 2020 Fiske Guide to Colleges named Oglethorpe one of only 20 “Best Buy Schools” in the nation and the only one in Georgia for the third year in a row.

This year marks the opening of the I.W. “Ike” Cousins Center for Science and Innovation and the Q. William Hammack, Jr. School of Business. Oglethorpe received a $50 million gift commitment, the largest in its history, from alumnus Bill Hammack ’73 to establish the new school of business.

In the past five years, Oglethorpe has seen the addition of an award-winning campus center; a residential complex with six state-of-the-art classrooms; and the expansion of arts and athletics facilities. Oglethorpe’s study abroad venture with LeadAbroad has expanded its global footprint, with the development of five global campuses in Barcelona, Cape Town, Greece, Paris, and Rome.

Oglethorpe is home to the Conant Performing Arts Center, Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, and the Piedmont School of Atlanta. The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels compete in the NCAA Division III Southern Athletic Association.
