Purpose:

To assist the Dean of Student Engagement and Career Development in the daily operation of the department. Primary roles include: first point of contact with students, parents, alumni, employers, staff, and faculty regarding career-related matters; Assistant Director will counsel students on career-related matters and assist with the supervision of work-grants. Will assist students, alumni, employers with computer applications; and the Four-Year Plan; work with Director on different committees, events, and programs to provide a variety of services to the students and extended College community.

Essential Functions:

  • Guide students and alumni through career advisement in:
    • Discovering their values, interests, personality and skills related to careers, exploring possible careers, ambitious goal setting and action planning.
    • Administering and interpreting assessments linking dispositions, preferences, and values to an academic and career path.
    • Suggesting experiences and interventions to enhance their holistic development and competitiveness.
  • Oversees and supervises the Coordinator of the Career Development Center and student workers
  • Manage the resources in the Career Resource Library and assists students to select appropriate materials.
  • Utilize the College’s online systems (Handshake and Focus2) in conjunction with student and employer needs; performs electronic updates of student data, tracking departmental statistics, and building surveys.
  • Initiate opportunities by integrating and infusing employers and alumni in the campus experience with Athletics, Student Services, Academic Departments, Registrar, Alumni Services, Institutional Research, Institutional Advancement, and faculty.
  • Work closely with Center for Advising and Core Experience with undecided first year students.
  • Assist in the management of weekly/bi-weekly Career Development Center functions, to include promotional emails, interview location arrangements, scheduling, training of student assistants and volunteers, assessment/survey administration, telemarketing, and student outreach initiatives.
  • Teach workshop classes in resume writing, cover letter development, job skills, interview tactics and professional decorum to students, alumni, employers, and parents.
  • Represent office and Flagler College at community events and at national/regional/state conferences as assigned.
  • Proactively engage student leaders and their organizations in career and professional development programs, particularly those which involve employers and alumni.
  • Contribute to the effort to initiate, maintain, and grow relationships with external employers, internship host sites, and professional associations.
  • Assist in other office functions, including but not limited to, career and networking fairs, etiquette dinners and leadership trainings.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Performs such other college-related duties/tasks as may be prescribed by the Dean of Student Engagement and Career Development
  • Serves on College committees as requested

Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in student personnel or closely-related field and experience in the field of career planning.
  • Proven prior office experience with emphasis on one-on-one interactions required
  • Academic office setting experience preferred
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Word, Excel, using the Internet and report writing skills.
  • Professional and effective verbal and written communication skills, with an emphasis on active listening skills
  • Patience and empathy for students, parents, and other constituents; must be congenial and respectful under stressful conditions
  • Organizational skills and accurate record keeping/data entry are essential. Must be able to multi-task and deal with frequent interruptions and maintain a professional, caring persona.
  • Must demonstrate a strong work ethic and team focus
  • Analytical skills for the review of documents and student files.
  • Must possess a willingness to implement and/or learn new software systems and remain proficient and current with upgrades and changes.
