This Postdoctoral Research Associate position is located in the Office of Commercialization and Economic Development (OCED) which is located in the Division of The Vice Chancellor for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Economic Development. OCED manages the University’s intellectual property including patenting marketing and negotiating licenses for the commercialization of University owned inventions. The Licensing Fellow (LF) with direct supervision from Director or his/her designee helps OCED manage license compliance, helps researchers commercialize novel research tools, and helps researchers exchange information and material for research purposes through the use of material transfer agreements and confidentiality agreements. The LF educates faculty regarding intellectual property matters in the process of facilitating exchanges of confidential information and research material. Duties include drafting and negotiating a range of intellectual property-related contracts and managing compliance for existing contracts. The LF places special emphasis on developing efficient management practices to facilitate research exchanges, and developing license management and compliance strategies in coordination with a wide range of related offices and stakeholders.
60%- Draft and negotiate MTAs/CDAs/IIAs – With significant direction and guidance from the Director of Licensing and Innovation Support the LF will learn to negotiate and draft material transfer agreements, confidentiality agreements, and interinstitutional agreements starting with OCED template agreements.
10%- Research Tool portfolio management – Evaluates new invention disclosures for research tools and makes recommendations to OCED team with regard to taking title and pursing commercialization. With significant guidance and direction from the Director of Technology Commercialization and/or Director of Licensing and Innovation Support, learn to market and license research tools.
10%- Negotiate and draft license agreements – With significant direction and guidance from the Director of Technology Commercialization and/or Director of Licensing and Innovation Support learn to negotiate and draft license agreements for research tools starting with OCED template agreements.
10%- Education and Service – With significant guidance and direction form the Director of Technology Commercialization, works with faculty to provide strategic guidance with regard to material transfer agreements, confidentiality agreements and research tool licensing
10%- License Compliance – With significant direction and guidance from the Director of Technology Commercialization and/or Director of Licensing and Innovation Support the LF will learn to review license agreements terms and related documents in order to monitor compliance and manage equity holdings.

Educational Requirements

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in science or engineering and a JD, MBA or master’s degree. A Ph.D. in science or engineering is highly desirable.

Qualifications and Experience

This position requires:
• Demonstrated strong interest in technology commercialization
• General understanding of intellectual property management, including both patents and , copyright
• The ability to understand a wide range of science and technology within computer, engineering, chemical, or biological science industries
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and set work priorities with minimal supervision over regular work activities
• Ability to establish and manage many projects and relationships simultaneously across a broad range of innovations and markets.
• A strong team oriented focus.
• Ability to build rapport and trust with faculty and colleagues.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Strong project management skills, with an acute attention to detail and ability to organize and communicate complex information.
Experience working in a university technology transfer office is preferred but not required.

      Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers.       Carolina Computing Initiative: Beginning with the freshman class of 2000, undergraduates must purchase laptop computers. The University has arranged for IBM to offer computers at excellent prices.
