DescriptionThe Campus Turf Manager is responsible for the maintenance and up keep of all outdoor athletic facilities to include; baseball complex, softball complex, soccer complex, football/lacrosse/field hockey stadium, track, tennis courts and all practice fields. Program and maintain irrigation systems for the entire campus; create, assign and complete jobs through the work order system. This position is the Building Coordinator for the Landscape Services Building and will perform repairs to sod fields and minor repairs to artificial turf fields; responsible for the athletics grounds maintenance budget and oversight of a procurement card for purchases. Also responsible for lining and painting all athletic fields for preparation for athletic and outside client events. Hires, trains and supervises a crew of athletic field groundskeepers, equipment operators and student employees.

The Campus Turf Manager is expected to maintain a Maryland Pesticide Applicators License and annually prepare pesticide program for all athletic fields to ensure compliance with MDA regulations; maintains Professional Fertilizer Business License and Professional Fertilizer Applicator Certificate through MDA. Monitors fertilization of all athletic fields and applies fertilizer and other amendments as required by regular soil testing. Works with procurement to write bid specifications to hire contractors for projects, purchase motor equipment and tools larger than $5,000, as well work with procurement on university contracts for the areas of athletic fields. Serves as a resource for construction services and operations and maintenance on any projects across campus that are specific to the area of fields and turf management. Manages and coordinates with all university departments or external clients on field preparations for events using all the above listed athletic and university fields. Conducts routine maintenance of equipment to include tractors, mowers, aerators, utility vehicles and other tools. Monitors inventory and order supplies as needed including pesticides, safety equipment, fertilizers, seed, tools, ballfield supplies, paint and other supplies as necessary. Responsible for monitoring weather and supplying reports to event managers, facility directors, coaches and other staff. Organizes and supports snow removal and storm response for athletic facilities, including plowing of artificial turf in stadium in order to keep field clear for use of events and practices.



QualificationsThis position requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and seven years of experience with or knowledge of sports turf and field management (equivalency of an Associate's degree and five years of experience or Bachelor's degree and three years of experience would also be accepted). Must be able to supervise, delegate and prioritize responsibilities. This position must be able to communicate effectively with employees, staff, administration, coaches and outside guests and clients. This ideal candidate should be very well organized and able to juggle multiple issues and responsibilities at one time while remaining calm and effective.

Degree in Sports Turf Management, Turf Grass Management or related field preferred. Certified Sports Field Manager preferred.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
