Financial Aid Counselor - Georgetown University Law Center

The Financial Aid Counselor provides counseling services to current and prospective students, and their families, regarding financial aid processes, procedures, and programs. S/he is responsible for understanding and communicating information about all federal, state, private, and institutional loan, grant, and work programs. Additionally, the incumbent reviews and processes financial aid applications and supports financial aid programs and initiatives. Reporting directly to the Associate Director of Financial Aid and assisting with outreach to specific student groups, visitors and their families, the Financial Aid Counselor has additional duties that include but are not limited to:

Financial Aid Programs
  • Provides assistance for various Financial Aid programs and initiatives, including but not limited to LRAP, Outreach, Financial Aid Technology, Compliance, Student Accounting, and Admissions.
  • Uses multiple forms of technology including Banner and Access to track, record, and distribute awards, as well as developing electronic notification systems.
  • Analyzes programmatic issues and serves as primary and secondary support.
  • Creates content and documentation to assist with operations of specific programs throughout the year.
  • Understands budgets for programs and works to create efficiencies to maximize resources.

Financial Aid Administration
  • Counsels students and their families on all aspects of financial aid assistance and how that assistance effects the payment of educational expenses.
  • Provides direction to students and parents surrounding the application process.
  • Evaluates and analyzes financial information submitted by applications to determine financial aid eligibility,according to University guidelines.
  • Reviews data in Banner, IDOC, FAFSA, NSLDS, and other financial aid systems to conduct reviews and complete full pictures of student and family financials.
  • Uses working knowledge of tax information in evaluation of "real income."
  • Utilizes knowledge of federal and institutional needs to communicate the impact of changes in family circumstances on financial aid packages.
  • Provides process overview and documentation requirements for various financial aid processes such as the appeal process.
  • Participates in administering financial aid programs such as federal work-study.

Financial Aid Awarding
  • Applies federal, state, and Law Center standards and guidelines to determine the type and amount of aid to award.
  • Analyzes applications, packages awards, and flags "no financial need" cases.
  • Ensures timely disbursement of federal, institutional, and external funds to student accounts and assists in the resolution of problems that impede disbursement.
  • Interprets activity on student accounts and answers billing statement, monthly payment plan, or other financial award questions.
  • Counsels and communicates individual award decisions and revisions.
  • Explains calculations of student and family contributions towards cost of attendance.
  • Maintains accurate award files at all times and conducts routine audits of file documentation and compliance standards.

Financial Aid Communication
  • Provides excellent customer service and responds professionally to general inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Participates in outreach programs to provide Financial Aid information.
  • Communicates and coordinates with students regarding the status of their aid applications and awards.
  • Tracks registration, communicates enrollment changes, and provides information about status of pending financial aid.
  • Provides timely and accurate Financial Aid information to Law Center departments, communicating with leadership regarding the status of individual aid applications.
  • Assists with Financial Aid or Law Center events, participating in various information sessions.
  • Upholds University and Law Center policies around confidential student records, and assists with any other duties as assigned.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Financial counseling, customer service, and administrative experience
  • Demonstrated ability to collect and analyze data, communicate clearly, and use independent and appropriate judgement with a diverse client population
  • A commitment to continuous quality improvement and customer service
  • General understanding of federal, state, and financial aid programs

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Banner, Formstack, Web applications, COGNOS, and higher education
