General Description / Primary Purpose

The Academic Advisor, under the direction of an Assistant Director or above, assists in the design, development and implementation of departmental processes and/or programs. Recommends policies and procedures to ensure effective coordination of departmental programs.

Essential Duties

Job Function

This position requires a positive, self-motivated person with excellent interpersonal communication skills, willing to work in an environment requiring strong emphasis on providing superior customer service in conformance with the University’s mission and values. College of Arts and Sciences Advising is an integral part of the Division of Undergraduate Studies and as such, is measured by its ability to successfully interact with students and to assist in meeting their individual needs. To this end, the Coordinator will be required to demonstrate a caring and patient attitude, to utilize conflict resolution skills, and to ensure that every effort is made to supply students with quality academic assistance. Provides day to day academic advising including the processing of all related records and forms. Advise students individually and in groups. Develop retention programs that will increase persistence rates of undergraduate students, while enhancing graduation rates. Produces degree evaluations for students incorporating transfer, AP, IB, and/or dual enrollment for credit. Potentially advise high profile, at-risk and/or special populations of students. Works collaboratively with the university faculty and staff. Continues professional development. The holder of this position is responsible for any NCAA and Atlantic Sun Conference bylaws and guidelines that a member of the UNF Athletic Compliance Department provides in addition to all UNF regulations. The individual must also assure that NCAA, Conference and UNF regulations are followed to the best of their knowledge and any violations thereof are reported to UNF Athletic Compliance. During declared campus emergencies, this position may be required to perform specific job related duties at a designated off campus location or place of residence.

Requires the ability to work well with others, meet dealines, organize a variety of tasks at one time and effectively manage time. Perform related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

Required Qualifications

A Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a directly related area of specialization; or a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university and two years of experience directly related to the job functions.

Faculty Position Required QualificationsDepartmental Requirements

Preference given to applicants who meet the required qualifications and also possess the following:
An academic background in the Biological Sciences or related field. Ability to maintain flexible hours and sensitivity to the needs of the University. Person must be available to work evenings and weekends – orientations, workshops, registration, etc.

Campus Security Authority (CSA) This position has been designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). This position has been designated as a CSA because it involves significant responsibility for student and campus activities and/or responsibility for campus security. As such, any person in this position must report to the University Police Department a crime or an incident that might be a crime that he/she becomes aware of. This position has a reporting requirement because the University believes that your responsibility for students, campus activities and/or campus security will make you someone members of the University community will see as an authority figure and someone to whom they can seek help. A CSA is not expected to investigate or determine whether a criminal incident actually took place. A CSAs responsibility is a duty to report. All positions designated as CSAs are required to complete an online or in-person training session. The holder of this position is designated as a “Responsible Employee” pursuant to their role under Title IX.
