The Division of Health Sciences is the largest and most complex division within the University, employing more than 900 EHRA employees and 1,700 SHRA employees. The Division is composed of numerous Centers, Institutes, and agencies such as East Carolina Heart Institute and Eastern Area Health Education Center, the Colleges of Allied Health Sciences, Nursing, the Brody School of Medicine, the School of Dental Medicine, and the Laupus Health Science Library. In addition to the Academic and Administrative responsibilities of the division, the four professional schools provide clinical services throughout eastern North Carolina in a variety of settings and venues.

The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Innovation and Discovery, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Educational Support and Faculty Development, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Executive Director for Business and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.

Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.

Job Duties

This position is located in the Office of Informatics and Education and reports to the Director of Informatics.

The Systems Engineer will provide supervision, planning, support, and maintenance of the Video Conference (VC), Audio Visual (AV), and Lecture capture (LC) systems for the School of Dental Medicine (SoDM) and the 8 Community Service Learning Centers (CSLC) throughout the state. The selected candidate will be responsible for supporting, planning, and implementing all AV, VC, and LC technologies such as control systems, matrix switchers, audio amplifiers, audio mixers, LCD, Laser, and DLP projectors, plasma/LCD monitors, Sympodiums, streaming media delivery systems, and H.323/SIP video conferencing systems. The position is required to have a broad spectrum of knowledge to provide oversight for large projects, which includes working with contractors, facilities services, networking, and other key partners. The position will also provide guidance, supervision, and mentoring to the SoDM Informatics staff.

Advanced Technical Knowledge and Supervision: Senior technical resource to the School of Dental Medicine’s classrooms, conference rooms, clinical teaching, and video conference/recording systems. This includes design, implementation, and supporting not only the School of Dental Medicines infrastructure, but also assisting ITCS with interdependent servers and classrooms. Overall supervision and chief administrator of the USDA RUS grant, reporting, and infrastructure for Ross Hall and the 8 CSLCs. Set up demonstrations of hardware and/or software for special fairs and university personnel. Including non-routine tasks as assigned by Supervisor.

Video Conference and Technology Support:
Provide support, configuration, and maintenance of all supporting video conferencing equipment within the School of Dental Medicine. This is to include highly complex Cisco TelePresence servers, video codecs (including hardware such as SX80, SX10, SX20, and C40, and software such as Jabber Video for TelePresence, and WebEx Meetings & Teams), mobile communications, and lecture capture. Responsible for maintaining the call structure and capture environment for the School of Dental Medicine. This includes working closely with administration and the academic dean. Conduct training classes, face-to-face and online, when needed. Provide dependable customer turn around, including reliable and timely response during business hours. Including non-routine tasks as assigned by Supervisor.

Content Distribution: Responsible for the support and maintenance of rich media recorders within the School of Dental Medicine. Primary support includes installation, paths, maintenance, and communication with department administrators to properly plan each event. Team response for local and remote recorders (Cisco, others as needed). Including non-routine tasks as assigned by Supervisor.

Testing, Research, and Consulting: Provide consulting services to the School of Dental Medicine focusing on the integration of computing technologies into the classroom and educational process. Exploration and critical analysis of hardware & software resources for both academic and administrative clients for desktop, clinical, and classroom applications. Problem resolution/referral. Resolve problems in a timely/effective manner. Act as departmental liaison between ECU’s Classroom Technologies and MTS.

Minimum Education/Experience

Master’s degree and 1-2 years’ experience; or a bachelor’s degree and 2-4 years’ experience: or an equivalent combination of education and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Candidates should have a thorough technical knowledge of Mac OS X, Cisco TelePresence SIP/H.323 videoconferencing, H.264/H.265 codecs, and AV equipment such as that listed above. Experience with audiovisual/environmental control systems and associated equipment, such as Crestron control systems and Extron matrix switchers, digital video delivery technologies such as Apple iTunes U and Cisco ECDS is desired. Candidates must possess effective communication skills (oral and written) and exceptional interpersonal skills.

Experience using or supporting Macintosh OS X, Apple Hardware, and iOS devices is preferred.

Crestron DMC Engineer and Cisco Certified is preferred.
