The Gift Accountant is responsible for processing gifts made to William & Mary and its foundations, served as a liaison to matching gift companies, and resolves donors inquiries and concerns, processes stock transfers.
Specific responsibilities of this position include (but not limited to):
- Complete all the necessary steps with speed and a high degree of accuracy to ensure all gifts, pledges, pledge payments made by a variety of mechanisms are processed following financial standards, University policies, and IRS regulations to William & Mary and all its related foundations.
- Receive and handle monies in the form of bankable and non-bankable transactions including cash, checks, and credit card information as well as payroll deduction information, securities, and gifts in kind for the University and its related foundations
- Produce daily transmittals and prepare them for daily deposit either through the University, through remote deposit capture technology, or direct transfer to the appropriate related foundation.
- Respond to donors concerns or questions. Conduct related research of giving history, documentation, and current statements to provide accurate information.
- Perform cross check of information in database for accuracy. Identify errors and discrepancies, and make corrections.
EDUCATION:
High school diploma or equivalent.
COMPETENCIES:
- Basic knowledge of accounting principles and practices and the ability to apply principles in accordance to state, federal and college policies.
- Demonstrated ability to learn, apply and retain complex and detailed accounting processes and procedures.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to work and analyze large sets of data, and produce reports on donations generated.
- Strong mathematical and computational skills, with a strong degree of accuracy, and the ability to audit or proofs one’s own work to ensure accurate calculations.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision, exercise discretion, diplomacy and use good judgment in performing all responsibilities.
- Proficiency working with a variety of software applications (MS Office) and automated accounting software.
- Strong oral and written communication skills with a strong customer service orientation, and the ability to articulately respond to donor calls and inquiries.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to thrive in a past-paced, cyclical environment while managing multiple priorities within strict deadlines.
EXPERIENCE:
- Accounting and/or finance experience.
- Experience using automated accounting software program and or system.
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s Degree in business, accounting, finance or related field or the equivalent combination of education, training and or experience.
COMPETENCIES:
- Knowledge of Advance database or other similar Development software is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of securities is desirable.
EXPERIENCE:
- Demonstrated experience working in an accounting function within a fundraising is highly preferred.
- Experience with Advance database.

- This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.
- This position is subject to overtime during high peak times (e.g. during the end of the calendar and end of the fiscal year).
