The Department of Art Therapy at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for a full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty position, beginning August 2020. Rank and salary are competitive with peer institutions and are commensurate with practice, scholarship, academic research, extent of teaching experience, and current professional standing.

DEPARTMENT PROFILE
SAIC’s 60-credit Master of Arts in Art Therapy and Counseling Program is focused on providing a comprehensive education that emphasizes development of the artist/art therapist, prepares graduates to work in a variety of settings, and fosters critical engagement within social and cultural contexts. The program was established in 1981 and has been approved by the American Art Therapy Association since 1989.

The Department of Art Therapy offers a three-year Master of Arts in Art Therapy and Counseling degree with an enrollment of 75 graduate students. The program currently has 5 full-time faculty and 23 part-time faculty, offering 60 graduate courses each year, including extensive supervised fieldwork experiences at the graduate level. RESPONSIBILITIES
Tenured and tenure-track faculty in art therapy teach and advise graduate students within the interdisciplinary art and design school environment of SAIC. The primary focus of the faculty member will be to contribute to the general goals of the art therapy department; take a leadership role in forging the future of the department; participate in student advising, admissions events, committee work, and special projects; contribute to the SAIC community through ongoing curricular development; and participate in departmental administration and school governance.

QUALIFICATIONS
A Master’s degree in Art Therapy with ATR-BC required; doctoral degree preferred. Prior teaching, supervisory, and administrative experience preferred; extensive professional experience as an art therapist preferred; candidates must have demonstrated scholarly and professional activity.

The department of art therapy invites applications from candidates who have a strong interest in art therapy research, critical theories of difference, and contemporary art theory/practice, as evidenced by research, scholarly writing, and/or art practice; a demonstrated interest in emerging forms of contemporary, culturally relevant art therapy education; an interdisciplinary approach to art therapy practice and scholarship; and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across disciplines. The department seeks candidates with experience in teaching art therapy and counseling with scholarship from fields such as, disability studies, family therapy, queer studies, critical race theory, feminist theory, transnational studies, and studies in ageing.

The ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity of the School by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or a unique set of experiences that expand the intellectual conversations and practices in the field. We seek candidates with the knowledge and aptitude to teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds. Candidates should demonstrate their experience with, or aptitude for, departmental administration.
