Job Details
This counseling position serves as a academic success counselor who provides counseling and programming for students who are on academic probation, returning from suspension/dismissal or at risk for dropout for other factors. The counselor will provide the leadership in the advising, counseling and program planning for students who are not in good academic standing. Collaborates with academic success advisors/counselors to coordinate departmental retention programming. Counselors provide instruction in Student Development (SDV) courses. The position services students for academic advising during walk-in hours for Student Services. He or she will assist students online using various media to promote student success and retention. The Academic Success Counselor will design and implement programs and webinars related college success skills, satisfactory academic progress, and academic probation. The counselor will collaborate with college faculty, staff and administrators as he or she works with students. The counselor will also participate in campus or college committees and special projects.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesCollaborates with key student services staff at the campus level for retention planning and programming. Represents Loudoun pertaining to the college-wide efforts in retention and academic success. Provides SDV instruction. Counsels individuals to help them understand and overcome personal, social, or behavioral problems affecting their educational or vocational situations. Advises students regarding educational issues, such as course and program selection, class scheduling, registration, and career planning. The counselor will be required to work some evening and weekend hours including, but not limited to, one weekday evening per week and on Saturdays at the beginning of each semester.
Minimum QualificationsMaster’s degree in Counseling or a master’s degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Counseling coursework.
Preferred QualificationsAdvising and teaching experience in a community college setting. Bilingual in English and Spanish.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesThe academic success counselor is to have strong active listening and decision making skills. He or she should also have knowledge in academic, career, transfer and personal counseling to adolescents and adults.
