The Office of Minority Student Affairs (OMSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is accepting applications for the Student Success Advisor positions. The Student Success Advisor will work with a team of professionals to improve the retention, success, and graduation rates for undergraduate students, from low-income, and academically underserved communities. Primary Position Function/Summary:

The Student Success Advisor is responsible for assisting with the implementation of the TRIO Student Support Services program in compliance with the approved grant proposal, federal legislation and regulations, state law, and university policies. The Student Success Advisor will promote student success by providing comprehensive academic support and retention services. This position will also provide specialized, innovative programs and services that foster academic excellence among diverse student populations including, but not limited to first-generation, low-income, and disadvantaged students.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists the Director in implementing the Plan of Operation and Evaluation for the approved TRIO Student Support Service grant.
  • Serves as an advocate and resource for assigned students and maintain frequent, systematic contact with those students.
  • Assists students in understanding and negotiating the academic rules and regulations that govern academic eligibility, progress, and successful degree completion.
  • Directs purposeful discussion with students to identify academic strengths and challenges, gauge adjustment to academic and social life on campus, and providing advice regarding viable pathways that may lead to enhanced student success.
  • Evaluates student needs objectively, fairly, and consistently and make appropriate referrals.
  • Maintains awareness of current trends and best practices regarding student outreach and/or retention; assist with developing retention strategies, and work closely with staff in implementing, evaluating, and improving retention strategies.
  • Maintains detailed and thorough notes on individual advising sessions using unit and campus level reporting mechanisms.
  • Maintains awareness of a variety of institutional information including new majors, minors, certificate programs, deadlines and important dates etc.
  • Assists with the development of reports, data analysis and assessment of students’ engagement and success.
  • Builds, fosters and maintains intentional relationships with relevant campus departments, units and/or colleges. Assists with the data entry, filing, and organization of student file and information.
  • Contributes to monthly and annual reports of the use and effectiveness for service delivery.
  • Collaborates with TRIO Talent Search and TRIO Student Support Services to provide coordinated service for participants.

  • Screens, recruits, recommends, and retains eligible students for the TRIO Student Support Services.
  • Assists admitted students with their orientation and acclimation to college.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with students to ensure delivery of services.
  • Develops and implements academic workshops and support services to enhance student success.
  • Assists with the development of grant proposals to secure resources that meet the programs’ needs.
  • Maintains accurate and audit-ready records of services and activities delivered to students.
  • Inputs accurate student data into proper database system on weekly basis.
  • Develops, maintains, and updates student’s action plans.
  • Periodic evening and weekend duties are required.

  • Participates in staff, committee, and other meetings as assigned
  • Provides relevant information for the Annual Performance Report.
  • Performs evening, weekend, and business travel events as requested.
  • Assists with meeting the operational needs by performing other appropriate related duties.

Required Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in education or from a discipline appropriate for administering comprehensive, collegiate academic support services, and mentoring.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s degree from a discipline appropriate for administering comprehensive, collegiate academic support service or mentoring.

Required Experience:

A minimum of two years of experience with academic advising, student retention, academic coaching, mentoring, or counseling. A minimum of two years of experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, first generation, low-income, TRIO, Gear Up, or EOP. Working knowledge of student systems such (e.g., Banner, Uachieve, DARS, Transferology, etc.).

Preferred Experience:

Three years of relevant work experience. Experience working for a TRIO program. Experience successfully matriculation in higher education as a first generation and/ or low-income student.

Ability to think clearly, creatively, and to solve problems proactively. Ability to work effectively individually and collaboratively. Excellent communication and administrative skills. Ability to manage competing priorities successfully. Ability to advise, mentor, and coach students successfully. Ability to design and implement successful educational programs. Must be student centered and service oriented.

Background Checks

This is a security-sensitive position. The chosen candidate is required to pass an extensive criminal background check before starting the position.

Appointment Status: This is a 12-month, full-time Academic Professional position.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and includes an excellent benefits package.
