Assistant Professor in Music History

Location:
Seattle, Washington
Open Date:
Sep 3, 2019
Description:

The School of Music at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle seeks a scholar of music history for a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the level of Assistant Professor, to begin September 16, 2020. This position is a nine-month annual service term, with an initial three-year appointment. The area of expertise sought is post-1900, in order to complement the research and teaching activities of the current academic and performing faculty of the School of Music. We welcome applicants who represent a broad array of approaches to the issues of repertory, composers, and trends; the School of Music will appreciate this range of research methodology. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in research that will have significant influence on the field of musicology, to pursue a well-developed research agenda and teach a variety of courses in music history at the graduate, undergraduate, and general education levels. Currently, M.A. students in music history can select an early music performance concentration, working with early music specialists to combine research and performance; and we hope to hire someone who will support a similar collaboration for graduate music history students who study contemporary music.

The UW operates on the quarter system, with a teaching load consisting of one or two courses per quarter, depending on the type of classes and enrollment; courses range from large lecture classes for non-majors, to courses for music majors, to graduate seminars in music history.

The School of Music resides in the College of Arts & Sciences and enrolls over 200 students, divided between undergraduate and graduate programs. Many students are pursuing degrees in performance; the program in music history offers the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. to a select group of students, all of whom receive full financial support at the graduate level. For decades, students from the bachelors and masters programs have entered leading departments of musicology for Ph.D. work; the graduates of the music history program at the University of Washington enjoy distinguished careers in academe, as well as careers in publishing and research libraries. Seattle is well known as a center of innovation and culture, and the School of Music enjoys a close relationship with the Seattle Symphony, collaborating in concerts and including symphony musicians on the faculty.

As a research-intensive (R1) institution, the University of Washington requires and supports research through funding that is awarded through internal competitive processes, as well as through guaranteed research quarters for assistant professors. The UW faculty engage in research, teaching, and service; the successful candidate will be expected to perform appropriate departmental and university service, to serve on graduate committees for academic and performance degrees, and to encourage the musical creativity and innovation the UW School of Music fosters. The School has many faculty members in performance who have a deep commitment to presenting contemporary music in many styles and genres; we hope to find a colleague who will explore new ways of collaborating with them.

The University of Washington seeks to recruit and retain a diverse workforce, to add to discovery of new knowledge, and to offer our students complex disciplines, perspectives and ways of knowing and learning. To help us work toward these ideals, we will ask applicants about the ways they have already and will continue to help expand inclusiveness in music, in research, teaching, performance, and programming.

Qualifications:

Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in musicology, or foreign equivalent, by the start of the appointment.

Application Instructions:

A review of applications will begin on October 15, 2019. To apply, submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, one sample of writing (an article or dissertation chapter), a statement of teaching philosophy, and a statement on perspectives and contributions to equity, diversity and inclusion; please request three reference letters that can address the teaching experience and research promise of the applicant. All application materials and letters of reference should be submitted via Interfolio. The search committee recognizes there will be a variety of post-1900 fields represented, and looks forward to learning about the context of the research of each applicant through the combination of the writing sample and letters. Some applicants will be asked for additional materials after the initial review of applications, and the committee plans to conduct Skype interviews prior to inviting candidates for a campus visit. More information about the program can be found at https://music.washington.edu/areas/music-history and inquiries can be sent to muhst@uw.edu.
