The Associate Vice President for Advancement Business Innovation & Services reports to the Vice President for University Advancement, providing strategic leadership for the University’s advancement infrastructure and serving as a member of the University Advancement Executive Leadership Team. The Associate Vice President for Advancement Business Innovation & Services is responsible for the strategic design, development, and implementation of operational functions that provide a foundation for University Advancement to achieve its goals in fundraising and engagement – leading and managing the teams related to information strategy, prospect development, gift accounting, finance & administration, and talent engagement. The  Associate Vice President for Advancement Business Innovation & Services is charged with aligning business support functions, policies and procedures, and technology infrastructure with the strategies, resources and priorities of the University and University Advancement – developing partnerships with colleagues in University Advancement, school/unit based advancement teams, and the University’s affiliated foundations as well as across campus with departments like finance, human resources, information technology, general counsel, internal audit, and compliance.

The Associate Vice President for Advancement Business Innovation & Services will:
•Develop a leading, comprehensive talent engagement program for University Advancement involving recruitment, selection, onboarding, training, professional development, career growth, and employee engagement strategies as well as overseeing diversity, equity, and inclusion excellence efforts.
•Deliver innovative technology as well as ground-breaking data systems and processes that support a complex, highly matrixed fundraising and engagement environment. 
•Integrate and oversee a comprehensive prospect development team including prospect identification and research, as well as prospect and portfolio management. 
•Produce overall vision and strategy as well as management and operations of gift accounting for the University and its related foundations to ensure accurate and timely recording and distribution of gifts and pledges according to IRS regulations, CASE reporting standards, and associated gift acceptance policies.
•Ensure strategic use of the financial and physical resources for University Advancement – leading the budget planning and financial forecasting processes, overseeing risk management protocols, oversee physical space needs in Williamsburg and our regional offices, and responsibility of the continuation of operations and security protocols.
•Inspire and lead strategic planning, evaluation, and implementation of improvements to functions and operations within Advancement Services – information strategy, prospect development, gift accounting, finance & administration, and talent engagement — evaluating current business practices and resources and optimizing performance for fundraising and engagement success.

Required Qualifications

EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree and significant or extensive professional level of experience or specialized expertise

COMPETENCIES:

  • Strategic vision with demonstrated leadership skills and the proven ability to inspire and lead tangible and measurable improvement of key processes.
  • Professional background in fundraising and engagement, or a professional background in research or technology; with a strong business acumen and management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop long-range goals, formulate policy, design and implement plans and programs.
  • Excellent analytical and technical skills with the ability to adapt traditional methods, concepts, models, designs, technologies, or systems to new applications to create improvements or solve problems.
  • A strong work ethic and dedication to build a culture of team productivity and individual accountability with strategic and nuanced communication skills to represent University Advancement with diverse internal and external audiences.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness, including but not limited to programming and staffing.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Extensive experience in advancement or in a closely related field, with an established record of increasing responsibilities.
  • Successful leadership and management of advancement services or advancement operations teams in a higher education setting; or similar operations and business leadership and management experience in a complex organization.
Preferred Qualifications

EDUCATION:
Advanced degree in a related field.

COMPETENCIES

  • Solid foundation in general accepted accounting principles (GAAP) with strong budget management expertise in a complex financial environment.
  • Demonstrated experience maximizing fundraising success by leading and managing programs that expand and strengthen the prospective donor base, prospect management, and solicitation pipeline.
  • Vision for the management and leadership of strategic talent management functions from recruitment and acquisition to onboarding and training.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Extensive experience successfully managing and leading finance, strategic talent management, technology/systems, prospect development, and/or gift accounting teams in a higher education setting.
