The Center for Research Computing (CRC) at Rice University enables faculty and researchers to effectively leverage on and off-premise (1) shared high performance computing, (2) VM and cloud computing, (3) data storage infrastructure, and (4) broader IT services, all with an eye to advance and accelerate cutting-edge research and scholarship across the University.

We are currently looking to expand our team of professionals with a research computing compliance facilitator to increase CRC’s ability to (1) develop services, consult, and educate researchers on data compliance and management across campus, and (2) to assist in CRC in a larger effort to develop, maintain, and support critical shared research software and hardware cyberinfrastructure to help accelerate the research mission of the university. The position is part of a larger team of research computing technologists and facilitators focused on delivering research cyber-infrastructure services and user support spanning natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and the humanities. Beyond a leadership role in the area of data compliance and management, we are looking for someone that is ready to engage in education and consultation with users as well as participate actively in envisioning, developing and maintaining technical software and hardware solutions to address critical user needs.

Experience reviewing, implementing, documenting, or supporting research computing and data compliance processes.

- Experience with hosted implementations with cloud providers such as AWS, GCP, or Azure

- Strong computer skills and understanding of technical security, access controls, and continuous monitoring
- Knowledge of research procedures and terminology, and research data management
- Ability to review federal, state and university research data use guidelines and to advise and educate users implementation strategies
- Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical clients
- Ability to lead activities on structured team development projects
- Familiarity with clinical trial regulations
- Excellent computer skills and understanding of databases
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities

Skills Preferred

- Strong knowledge of grants and contracts functions
- Familiarity with IRB, IACUC, or IBC regulation policies and procedures

Internal / External Contacts

Internal Contact: Daily interaction with CRC team members and IT staff, with faculty members, research staff, administrative staff, and students in all departments.

External Contact: Contact by telephone and in person with vendors to facilitate installation and maintenance of new software products, frequent contact via electronic mail and telephone with persons not employed by Rice University on a nationwide basis, occasional contact in person with persons not employed by Rice University at off-site conferences and meetings.

- Develops, implements, and manages efficient policies and procedures to facilitate the processing of research compliance protocols in accordance with university and federal regulatory requirements
- Performs review of complex research protocols with little to no supervision
- Manages the development and improvement of new protocol submission process, electronic systems, and training modules
- Serves as an expert liaison between the research investigator and the reviewer

- Provides education and training for new investigators, administrators, and OIT staff
- Assists in creation and maintenance of documentation resources for the University community including: security plans, facilities and services descriptions, HPC environments, data management plans, data use agreements, and other resources relevant for researchers
- Acts as service owner for secure research computing environment
Identifies and develops new technologies to address emerging compliance infrastructure needs
- Assists in maintaining and monitoring compliance for existing systems and supporting new research computing workflows
