The University of Virginia Police Department is seeking diverse, professional candidates to join our team at the rank of Police Lieutenant. UPD police officers provide daily enforcement and security services as well as coverage for major events including national championship Division 1 athletic teams and world-renowned VIP guest visits to grounds.
The department is comprised of 77 sworn officers, 63 non-sworn security officers and 30 civilian employees advancing our fair, impartial and community policing mission at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. UPD officers serve the UVA medical center which was voted the top hospital in Virginia in 2019 and hosts the only level 1 trauma center in the region and our academic grounds. Our service area community encompasses a diverse population of nearly 60,000 students, faculty, patients and visitors on any given day.

The police lieutenant reports through the chain of command to a Captain or Deputy Chief and supervises, plans, coordinates and oversees the activities and operations of staff assigned to one of the four divisions of the department including but not limited to: patrol, investigations, administrative, medical center.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
- Engage in policing through fair and impartial practices. Decisions and enforcement will not be predicated on race, gender, religion or sexual orientation.
- Directs personnel to assure the proper performance of duties and adherence to established rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Prepares required correspondence and reports and maintains records relating to department activities.
- Provides planning, organizing, monitoring and controlling of a variety of law enforcement or security functions, programs/projects, and related activities.
- Plans work schedules, prepares reports and develops policy.
- Coordinates emergency responses to disasters and other emergency incidents on grounds or at the medical center.
- Performs “Incident Command” responsibilities and assists as needed in the emergency operations center (grounds or medical center).
- Conducts internal investigations and background investigations as assigned by the Chief of Police or Deputy Chief of Police.
- Works closely with all internal and external stakeholders to ensure an effective working relationship.
- Works closely with other law enforcement agencies to further public safety or law enforcement interests.
- Participates in the development of goals, objectives, priorities and strategic plans.
- Represents the department at a variety of public functions.
- Responsible for carrying out the mission of the department and promoting the core values of the department.
- Analyzes administrative and organizational problems and makes appropriate recommendations.
- Responds quickly and effectively to difficult situations.
Applicants must be DCJS certified Law Enforcement Officer in State of Virginia (or have the ability to obtain certification within six months of hire). At least 4-7 years of law enforcement experience, with 2-4 years as a first line supervisor in an academic setting is required. Applicants must be currently employed at the rank of Sergeant or higher in a mid-sized agency. Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication skills is essential.
A valid Virginia driver’s license with a positive point balance is required, out of state applicants will be required to obtain a Virginia license by the start date.
