DESCRIPTION

The California Smokers' Helpline (CSH) is part of the UCSD Moores Cancer Center. The Helpline conducts research as well as provides free cessation related counseling service. The Helpline was the first statewide telephone-counseling service for smoking cessation in the U.S. that was based on experimentally-proven protocol (established in 1992). Cessation service is now provided using telephone and internet-based protocols.

The phone counseling service is provided in six languages--English, Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Korean, and Vietnamese. The Helpline conducts high-caliber intervention research as well as population studies. The Helpline is funded to conduct two large and ongoing surveys in California: the California Student Tobacco Survey (CSTS) and the survey to evaluate California's TUPE (Tobacco Use Prevention Education) program. The Helpline currently has grants and contract in excess of $10 million annually.

Under supervision of the Director of Research, the Survey Researcher will be primarily responsible for assisting with overall research study planning, design and question development; interacting and coordinating with school site officials; coordinating research study implementation and data collection; monitoring and improving response rates; collecting qualitative data; assisting in preparation of reports and deliverables; and conducting literature reviews. Areas of research study may include one or more of the following: 1) statewide California Student Tobacco Survey (CSTS), 2) Tobacco-Use Prevention Education (TUPE) program evaluation and/or 3) County-Specific California Student Tobacco Survey (CSTS)/data management.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree in related area; and/or equivalent experience/training.

  • A minimum of two or more years of relevant experience.

  • Proven working knowledge and experience with data collection activities.

  • Working knowledge of the design and implementation of data collection procedures and protocols.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of survey instrument development.

  • Demonstrated experience with report preparation and presentation.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Excel and Access database skills for monitoring shared reporting.

  • Strong ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a research team, taking direction from study directors.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience and training in the facilitation of surveys.

  • Knowledge of the field of research related to tobacco use and prevention.

  • Experience in conducting literature reviews utilizing multiple sources of media.

  • Experience working in a research setting using protocols involving human subjects including knowledge of UCSD HRPP policies and procedures.

  • Experience using qualitative and/or statistical software applications.
