Preferred Qualifications

A M.S. in wildlife ecology or a related field is strongly preferred, although exceptional candidates with a B.S. and previous professional experience equivalent to a Master’s degree will also be considered. The candidate should have a strong background in applied wildlife ecology and prior experience conducting field research. Preference will be given to applicants possessing both strong field and organizational skills. In particular, prior experience capturing and handling carnivores, large mammals or similar species, and experience using firearms is desired. The successful applicant is expected to demonstrate commitment to timely completion of deliverables, effective communication with the PI’s, and the ability to work collaboratively.

Position Summary

The University of Georgia’s Savannah River Ecology Lab is soliciting applications for a Research Professional II in Wildlife Ecology. A Research Professional is needed to assist Dr. James Beasley with the project design and oversight, personnel management, and reporting duties associated with several ongoing and future research projects investigating the spatial ecology and population dynamics of wildlife. This position also will be responsible for assisting Dr. Beasley with the supervision of graduate students and research technicians on a day to day basis as well as for assisting with training field and laboratory personnel in specific job-related protocols and skills necessary to conduct research. Examples of current projects include wild pig ecology and management, carnivore ecology, rabies management, and ecotoxicology of game species. The position will be based at the Savannah River Site located nearby Aiken, SC. Potential also exists for some travel to international field sites. The selected candidate will be responsible for working with Dr. Beasley on the development of research plans, assistance with project oversight and collection of data, general lab organization and data management, supervision and training new personnel, development of reports and manuscripts, and assisting the PI’s with other assigned tasks.

SREL is located on the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site in AIKEN, SOUTH CAROLINA. Applicants must be able to pass a security clearance and a background investigation.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Experience and proficiency in design and implementation of research projects, capturing and handling wild animals, experience using firearms, knowledge and preferably experience using anesthetics for immobilizing wildlife, strong organizational skills, ability to assist in the oversight of technicians and students, experience with the writing or reports and the publication of research results.

Routinely lifting heavy objects, ability to operate specialized equipment such as firearms.
