The Assistant Chief of Public Safety is responsible for organizing, supervising, training, and executing campus patrol operations. The position provides supervision to the Public Safety Dispatch and PBX operations, mid and late night shift operations and the campus outreach program.

    Provides direct supervision of all implied and specified tasks associated with the Public Safety MissionIdentifies and recommends requirements for personnel staffing, operational training, maintenance and administration of department equipment and vehicles and provides direct supervision for all campus patrol operations and special activities requiring Public Safety supportDevelops, maintains and submits monthly and annual operational statisticsPlans, schedules and coordinates Public Safety daily operations that includes Public Safety Officers’ shift assignments covering a continuous 24-hour, 7-days per week continuous operationScreens and interviews candidatesDevelops programs to provide reasonable safety and security services to students, faculty, staff and public on College propertyReviews all shift reports and operational activities, checks and verifies daily log entries, vehicle trip tickets, overtime rosters, alarms and access control reportsPrepares and maintains Patrol Operations Orders, After Action Reports, and Lessons Learned in support of Public Safety operations and special activitiesSupervises the Department’s Dispatch and PBX operation, and provides operational and administrative oversight of mid and late night shifts, as well as, the Campus Outreach Program.Provides first line review and appropriate distribution of all operational and Incident Report activity that occurs throughout the afternoon and evening shiftsDevelops, reviews and recommends internal administrative policies and procedures that will improve the quality of services provided by the department and ensures compliance with existing College and Department of Public Safety policies and procedures.Participates in identifying, developing and recommending operational needs based on the annual budgetAssesses the need for staff development and training, and forwards for approval, requests for training, or attendance at activities, designed to improve officer professional knowledge and skills in the areas of safety and securitySubstitutes for absent Public Safety Officers as needed

  • Associate’s Degree, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, in the military, law enforcement, or the field of Safety and Security, and a minimum of three (3) years supervisory experience in related field
  • All degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution
  • Must be able to successfully complete a basic security-training course and provide certificate of completion
  • Must possess a valid Florida State Unarmed Officer “D” license
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver License and have the ability operate College motorized vehicles safely
  • Must complete a Miami Dade Police background investigation prior to being hired
  • Knowledge and understanding of College organization, goals and objectives, and policies and proceduresKnowledge in the use of two-way radio devices, telephonic communication, and other communication devicesKnowledge of security/safety general policies and procedures locks/locking systems, lighting systems, alarms, CCTV, and regulations applicable to the use of such itemsKnowledge of the buildings and grounds patrolled and of the rules and regulations pertaining to the College campusesStrong interpersonal skills and exercises mature judgment with tact and diplomacy when dealing with the public
  • Proficient in computer skills
  • Ability to react promptly and correctly in emergencies
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and regulations and procedures manuals
  • Ability to plan, assign, review, supervise and inspect the work of others
  • Ability to work long hours, travel in-county and cover long distances, if necessary.
  • Ability to safely operate College motorized vehicles and periodically conducts foot patrols.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evenings, weekends, holidays, on-call assignments and respond to after-hour emergenciesAbility to work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff
