Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher degree).  Three (3) years of full-time experience in academic advising, counseling, or student services at the college or university level.  Highly proficient, professional experience in word processing, spreadsheet management, electronic messaging and Internet applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Apps, etc.).  Experience interacting with individuals at various levels within an institution as well as the general public whenever necessary. Experience interacting with a culturally and ethnically diverse population.  Experience working with, and maintaining confidential information.


Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher degree) in higher education, student affairs, social work, counseling, or a related discipline.  Additional years of experience in academic advising, counseling, or student services at the college or university level working with students.  Academic advising experience. Experience with admissions processing using software. Experience leading, facilitating or teaching workshops, meetings or seminars.


Brief Description of Duties:  

The College of Business Academic Advisor provides high quality, proactive individual and group academic advising to College of Business (COB) undergraduate and graduate students. The COB Academic Advisor supports new COB direct admit and AOI students in promoting their academic success as well as providing support to the graduate students. The COB Academic Advisor is an active leader and participant in assisting with the orientation and registration process, planning activities, and events throughout the year developing and implementing advising strategies for success for students in academic jeopardy, and building connections with faculty, staff, and student constituents. This position provides an opportunity to more effectively and efficiently serve undergraduate students. In addition, this will provide more opportunity for our current Graduate Recruiter and Advisor to be out of the office recruiting to build our graduate enrollment. This position will manage all admissions processes for both graduate and undergraduate programs using various institutional software and Excel. The incumbent must possess outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, experience successfully working independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem-solving and strategic and analytical thinking skills with an ability to solve problems and make effective decisions. Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail is important to this role. Incumbent  must have experience effectively multi-tasking in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment with a high degree of accuracy and organization.


    Academic Advising: 

Provide high quality, proactive academic advising to undergraduate and graduate students. Advise and track an assigned cohort of students (i.e. BUS majors, A-L, MBAs with concentrations and MS). Such advising will occur in individual and group settings on an ongoing basis and will include regular communication about courses, majors, Stony Brook Curriculum and policies/procedures. Provide active support, follow-up, and strategies for success either individually or in a group setting to all students on those on academic action. Create and implement detailed plans of actions for COB students considered academically at risk to assist in their academic success. As appropriate, will consult with the supervisor (undergraduate or graduate). This position is responsible for issuing permissions for courses and sections requiring consent (course equivalency authorizations, wait list, and course retake approvals and petitions, research, internships, TA, etc.)  Facilitate the declaration process for all COB programs. Assist in the compiling and tracking student progress toward graduation and degree clearances.

    Admissions Processing: 

Manage the College of Business admissions process for both undergraduate and graduate student applications.  The incumbent will prepare students admissions file, review and make a determination on whether admissions criteria are clearly met; if clear decision, the incumbent has the authority to render a decision, borderline candidates will go to the appropriate admissions committee for review and decision.  Maintain application information for data tracking. Communicate admissions decisions in a timely manner and work to complete applicant files to improve yield. Work effectively with the Graduate School and Visa and Immigration Services to admit students and obtain student visas.

    Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.


Special Notes:

This is a full time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
