Shenandoah Conservatory invites applications for an innovative musician, teacher, educator, and choral pedagogue to join the Conservatory’s Music Education faculty. This full-time position begins in August of 2020.

The Position and Responsibilities

The music education faculty seeks a dynamic and collaborative choral/vocal musician, teacher, and scholar; someone possessing clear research-to-teaching practice, and excited by the work of training future music teachers positioned to succeed in diverse 21^st century classrooms. Beyond having experience with traditional choral literature, this music teacher educator will have experience in jazz or popular styles and be a champion for collaboration and artistic excellence across vocal genres and styles, understanding that excellence in music making transcends stylistic boundaries.

The chosen candidate will be eager to help advance the preparation of Music Education students focused on vocal ensembles/choral singing, and will be energized by opportunities to collaborate with Shenandoah Conservatory’s choral directors and Vocal Pedagogy voice faculty.

The successful candidate’s teaching responsibilities will include choral methods courses with a lab choir, field experience courses (elementary, middle school, and high school), and student teacher supervision for secondary choral music placements. Preferred qualifications include an expertise in an area of music teacher education such as music literacy, technology in music classrooms, culturally responsive teaching, trauma-informed pedagogies or another area of importance to the field. Other possible teaching assignments are dependent on department or Conservatory needs and candidate qualifications, which may include a university choral ensemble. Contributions to program development recruitment as well as Conservatory-wide collaboration are expected.

Qualifications

1. Exceptional musicianship;
2. Public school experience that includes secondary choral ensemble teaching;
3. Successful collegiate teaching experience;
4. Demonstrated scholarship in the field;
5. Exhibited commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion; and
6. An earned doctorate in music education, or related terminal degree preferred (ABD considered).

About the Music Education Program

Shenandoah Conservatory, an institution originally founded in 1875 to support the training of music teachers, has long served as a leader in music education and is proud to advance its role as Virginia’s premiere and progressive center of music education training. The Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Master of Music Education degrees are recognized as innovative and forward-oriented, and are continually updated to meet the needs of music classrooms of the future. Undergraduates begin music education coursework in their first semester and have opportunities for hands-on teaching experiences throughout the program. Students – who enroll from across the region and country – may select and instrumental (classical or jazz) or a choral/general music track for the program and subsequent Virginia licensure.
