Shenandoah Conservatory invites applications for an innovative musician, teacher, educator, and choral pedagogue to join the Conservatory’s Music Education faculty. This full-time position begins in August of 2020.

The Position and Responsibilities

The music education faculty seeks a dynamic and collaborative choral/vocal musician, teacher, and scholar; someone possessing clear research-to-teaching practice, and excited by the work of training future music teachers positioned to succeed in diverse 21st century classrooms. Beyond having experience with traditional choral literature, this music teacher educator will have experience in jazz or popular styles and be a champion for collaboration and artistic excellence across vocal genres and styles, understanding that excellence in music making transcends stylistic boundaries.

The chosen candidate will be eager to help advance the preparation of Music Education students focused on vocal ensembles/choral singing, and will be energized by opportunities to collaborate with Shenandoah Conservatory’s choral directors and Vocal Pedagogy voice faculty.

The successful candidate’s teaching responsibilities will include choral methods courses with a lab choir, field experience courses (elementary, middle school, and high school), and student teacher supervision for secondary choral music placements. Preferred qualifications include an expertise in an area of music teacher education such as music literacy, technology in music classrooms, culturally responsive teaching, trauma-informed pedagogies or another area of importance to the field. Other possible teaching assignments are dependent on department or Conservatory needs and candidate qualifications, which may include a university choral ensemble. Contributions to program development recruitment as well as Conservatory-wide collaboration are expected.

Qualifications

  1. Exceptional musicianship;
  2. Public school experience that includes secondary choral ensemble teaching;
  3. Successful collegiate teaching experience;
  4. Demonstrated scholarship in the field;
  5. Exhibited commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion; and
  6. An earned doctorate in music education, or related terminal degree preferred (ABD considered).

Applicants will be asked to submit a cover letter and C.V. with contact information for three references. Additional materials such as links to teaching videos, conducting videos, or course materials may be requested after initial review by the committee. Applicants should be aware that a criminal background check will be required as part of the hire process.

Applicants should note that Shenandoah University is committed to enriching its educational experience and culture through the diversity of its faculty, administration, and staff. All candidates are strongly encouraged to include a statement in their cover letters addressing ways in which they may be able to contribute to that commitment.

A Place for Collaborative and Innovative Artists/Mentors

As a school uniquely committed to rigor, care, and innovation, Shenandoah Conservatory is home to exceptional artists and scholars who are strongly oriented towards collaboration, mentorship, and innovative approaches to the career preparation of students. The Conservatory’s ShenCoLAB (formerly titled Student Performance Week) is but one example of the Conservatory’s nation-leading embrace of innovation and collaboration; a (first-in-the-country) week-long stoppage of all classes and rehearsals across all programs with the school turned over to students for student-led (and faculty mentored) collaborative projects.

About the Music Education Program

Shenandoah Conservatory, an institution originally founded in 1875 to support the training of music teachers, has long served as a leader in music education and is proud to advance its role as Virginia’s premiere and progressive center of music education training. The Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Master of Music Education degrees are recognized as innovative and forward-oriented, and are continually updated to meet the needs of music classrooms of the future. Undergraduates begin music education coursework in their first semester and have opportunities for hands-on teaching experiences throughout the program. Students – who enroll from across the region and country – may select and instrumental (classical or jazz) or a choral/general music track for the program and subsequent Virginia licensure. Students have the opportunity to teach for two additional semesters in the on-campus home school music program. The Master of Music Education degree is designed for the practicing music educator. Students attend classes in three summers focusing on the intersection of pedagogy, musicianship, and scholarship. The degree is uniquely designed to increase students’ skills as reflective musician teachers. A research teaching project provides a practical capstone document.

Shenandoah's History

Dayton, Virginia was Shenandoah’s home for 85 years. In 1875, the university was founded there as Shenandoah High School. Over the next 85 years, the institution changed names six times but always kept “Shenandoah” as part of its name. In 1946, the school nearly closed due to financial concerns. Rather than closing the school, university president Dr. Forrest S. Racey oversaw the move to Winchester. The last classes in Dayton began in the fall of 1959 with an enrollment of 159 students. Shenandoah opened its doors in Winchester in September 1960.

In Winchester, the school began to thrive and, in 1991, became Shenandoah University.
