The School of Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill works to improve the lives of North Carolinians by engaging in practical scholarship that helps public officials and citizens understand and improve state and local government. As the largest university-based local government training, advisory, and research organization in the United States, the School of Government offers up to 200 courses, webinars, and specialized conferences for more than 12,000 public officials each year. In addition, faculty members annually publish approximately 50 books, manuals, reports, articles, bulletins, and other print and online content related to state and local government. The School is also home to a nationally ranked graduate program in public administration and specialized centers focused on information technology and environmental finance.
The SOG seeks a Deputy Director to collaboratively manage and grow its Center for Public Leadership and Governance (CPLG). The CPLG equips public officials with the knowledge and skills they need to successfully lead and govern their organizations and communities. Building on SOG’s established reputation as a trusted provider of high-quality, practical courses and a contributor to scholarship on public leadership and governance, CPLG offers a comprehensive array of courses, services, research, and publications to public organizations at the local and state levels in North Carolina and, eventually, across the nation. The scope of programs builds on faculty knowledge and information about leadership, governance, and management in the public sector, the SOG’s hallmark. Clients include appointed and elected government officials at the local and state levels, as well as nonprofit and private sector partners who are working on issues of the common good. Educators providing training and consultation services include University faculty, consultants, adjuncts, and executive coaches who may be hired on a one time or continual basis.
Reporting directly to the faculty Director and as part of a collaborative management team that values transparency, the Deputy Director will be responsible for (1) strategic oversight and expansion of the Center’s operations, including expanding CPLG’s programmatic reach to new audiences; (2) advancing CPLG’s business model and managing self-sustaining revenue-generating activities; (3) managing communications, marketing, and relationships with sponsors and partners; and (4) handling personnel administration matters and other duties in support of the faculty Director. There are no immediate supervisory responsibilities for this position; once the Center is established, the responsibilities of the Deputy Director may include supervision of support staff and/or direct oversight of programs, services, and professionals.
The Deputy Director will exemplify the collaborative culture of the School, working effectively as a team member with other SOG divisions, including Strategic Communications, Business and Finance, Advancement, and Program Support, as well as with the faculty and staff in the Public Leadership area.

Masters degree in relevant field; e.g., public administration, business. For candidates demonstrating comparable professional experience, a relevant undergraduate degree is acceptable.Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate must have at least five years’ professional experience in managing and operating large projects in a complex system, such as a higher education setting. The position requires someone who is both highly organized and creative, and is an excellent verbal and written communicator. Must have experience developing and executing business plans, managing budgets, and initiating or significantly redesigning programs and services for clients. Familiarity with development/fundraising principles and entrepreneurial initiatives strongly preferred.Equal Opportunity Employer
