**FEDERAL WORK STUDY**

COMMUNITY SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE

STARS AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM: MATH CREDIT RECOVERY TUTOR

Stars is a local faith-based nonprofit organization that welcomes, equips and walks alongside marginalized youth in a relational-rooted environment to pursue a fulfilling life and achieve their highest hopes. We partner with nonprofits, faith communities and entrepreneurs to provide necessary collaborative services and resources that serve these students throughout the Pasadena Unified School District.

Seeking qualified candidates for our Math Credit Recovery Tutor positions, who assist 8th grade Marshall Fundamental students with complete five week packets of work which will go towards changing a failing grade into a pass and allow the student to graduate. (Packets will be graded by a credentialed teacher). FWS students will also be given the opportunity to provide homework assistance to middle-school students in the Stars program. FWS students must be available Tuesday - Thursday from 3:00pm - 7:00pm, with occasional meetings on Mondays. We are currently seeking FWS tutors who can commit to working between 12-20 hours/week. The hourly rate is $15 per hour.

Location: Tutoring and training will take place at 1480 E. Washington Blvd, Pasadena 91104 Additional meetings will take place at 712 E. Villa St, Pasadena 91101

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Working with two 8th grade students who's math proficiency is below grade level.
  • Providing homework assistance in various subjects for 6th-8th grade students.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Willingness to learn about tutoring strategies
  • Patience working with marginalized students who need help learning ability to work independently or with limited supervision
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups
  • Ability to commit to a schedule and come promptly when expected

The criteria for being a Community Service Federal Work Study student is below:

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Eligible for the Federal Work Study program at Pacific Oaks College (contact Financial Aid to verify your status).
  • Must maintain FWS eligibility for the entire academic year.
  • Must have access to their own reliable transportation and be able to travel to off-campus partner work site.
  • Requires ability to walk up to 4-5 hours per day with intermittent occasional sitting, standing, and bending.
  • Occasionally may be required to lift items up to 20 pounds to a height up to 3 feet.
  • Occasionally may be required to carry items up to 20 pounds for distances up to 500 feet.
