Position Summary:
The Social Media Strategist and Content Producer helps position Middlebury and its people as current, consequential, and engaged in the world's challenging issues. And through an imaginative use of social media, motivates our stakeholders to join us in Middlebury's work to bring about a world with a robust, inclusive public sphere, where ethical citizens work across intellectual, geographic, and cultural boundaries. The Social Media Strategist and Content Producer will administer Middlebury's central social media efforts, which includes developing a measurable social media strategy, managing key social media channels, creating (and co-creating) social media content, and providing leadership (as needed) to continually improve the level of social media practice at Middlebury. The Social Media Strategist and Content Producer will operate in a highly collaborative environment, working alongside colleagues who together are helping to define and project “authentic Middlebury” to our stakeholders and to the world. The ultimate goal: to deepen current relationships and make new connections with those who believe in what Middlebury does so Middlebury can fulfill its mission in partnership with them. The Social Media Strategist and Content Producer will demonstrate a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others.

Essential Functions:

• Strategy: Develop a measurable strategy for using social media channels to support Middlebury’s communications and marketing goals by engaging with multiple audiences, including prospective students, current students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, volunteers, funding agencies, and others. Within that framework, develop tactical campaigns and content calendars that move the needle. Research and evaluate emerging (and current) platforms and make recommendations on whether and how we might adopt. Stay abreast of current research on how various audiences derive knowledge from social media to ensure Middlebury is taking full advantage of all its social media opportunities.

• Management: Take primary responsibility for day-to-day tactics, monitoring, and management of Middlebury’s central social channels, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram, and emerging social platforms. Engage with multiple audiences and cultivate social relationships with important influencers. Monitor online mentions of Middlebury on various social platforms and report out. Alert media relations and other essential colleagues as needed.

• Content: Develop original social content—individually and in collaboration with colleagues—that furthers Middlebury’s communications and marketing goals. Curate content from other channels that can be repurposed to meet those goals. Finds ways to tell Middlebury stories in ways that are imaginative and appropriate to each channel we engage with. Write, edit, take photos, and shoot video for other departmental projects, as needed.

• Leadership: As necessary and in partnership with colleagues, provide institution-wide leadership to help continually improve Middlebury’s social media quality. Collaborate with colleagues in advancement, admissions, student affairs, athletics, and other offices across the institution to coordinate social media operations and develop a seamless integration of social media into Middlebury websites, as appropriate.
• Analytics and Reporting: Monitor the effectiveness of social media strategies through a variety of quantitative and qualitative measures. Report out regularly to colleagues and leadership.

• Internal Communications: Participate in strategy sessions on how to continually improve the state of internal communications at Middlebury, throughout all its schools.

• Emergencies and Crises: Play a key role during critical times to monitor social media discussions, disseminate information, correct misinformation, and undertake other duties as assigned to help protect the Middlebury community and the institution’s reputation.

General Responsibilities:

Qualifcation
Education:

Bachelor’s degree in new media communications, communications, journalism, English, or similar fields, or equivalent experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Proven track record of developing sophisticated, strategic approaches to social media
• Demonstrated strong interest in content marketing tactics and strategy
• Expertise managing social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn Instagram
• Excellent writing and editing skills, with particular focus and experience in writing for social media using appropriate conventions and voice
• Excellent photography and videography skills, with particular focus and experience in producing for social media using appropriate conventions and voice
• Proven track record in managing complexity and delivering results in a complex organization
• Proficiency with MS Office suite of tools (e.g. PowerPoint, Word, Excel)
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Good judgment in identifying issues and recommending solutions to others
• Ability to work collaboratively across organizational lines
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Commitment to professionalism, deadlines, and teamwork
• Knowledge of social media listening tools and reputation management practices
• Ability to work collaboratively and independently
• Ability to create material for different audiences while maintaining a unified voice
• Attention to detail and excellent proofreading skills

Experience:
Minimum of four years of social media strategy and content production experience relevant to the knowledge, skills, and abilities referenced above.

Finalists for this position will be asked to submit a case study of a past social media campaign they have run. The case study should explain initial campaign goals and the strategy behind the campaign including timeline, execution of the strategy, and an evaluation of the campaign’s results. Writing, photography, and video samples will also be considered.

This is followed by the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, which brings together 200 authors and aspiring authors for 11 days of intensive exchange about the art of writing. The Bread Loaf School of English is in session each summer not only in Middlebury but also at Lincoln College, Oxford, in the United Kingdom; at St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico; and at the University of North Carolina at Asheville.
