Position Summary:

The Division of Information Technology (DoIT) provides information technology services to UW-Madison, UW System campuses, UW System Administration, and other associated agencies. DoIT employs approximately 900 people and operates with an annual budget of over $100 million dollars. The position is located within the Solutions Engineering Group (SE). SE provides application administration and systems engineering services of both on-premises and cloud-based systems for UW-Madison and UW System. SE technologists perform IT infrastructure design, implementation, administration, security, and support for a wide variety of application, cloud computing, and server platforms.

The Linux Systems Engineer will act as an enterprise systems administrator for both on-premises and cloud Linux systems and services. This position will provide IT infrastructure, systems, and application support to a diverse range of campus groups in support of the mission of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

1. Required
* Effective oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service.
* Minimum 3 years of professional experience supporting Linux server operating systems. (Minimum 7 years to be considered for Senior level.)
* Minimum 1 year of experience writing and maintaining scripts in development languages such as Python, Perl, Ruby, PowerShell, or Linux shell scripting.
* Experience supporting servers in an environment that practices formal change, configuration, incident management, or service request management.
* Experience designing or architecting IT systems or services.
* Experience troubleshooting IT issues to resolution.
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.

2. Preferred
* Knowledge of configuration management tools like Ansible, Chef, PDQ Deploy, Puppet, OpsWorks, or Windows PowerShell Desired State Configuration.
* Knowledge of infrastructure as code solutions like CloudFormation, ARM templates, and Terraform.
* Knowledge of ANSI SQL or other SQL varieties.
* Experience supporting services and systems in a higher education environment.
* Experience with security benchmarks like NIST 800-53, NIST 800-171, NIST 800-144, CIS benchmarks.
