The Academic Coordinator position provides a broad range of services in support of students enrolled in the Gateway to College program. As the primary contact for Gateway to College students, this position initiates and maintains ongoing and consistent student contact to ensure student success within the program; provides direction for academic support, course selection, and oversight for student attendance and other issues; researching and evaluating available internal and external services to assist students in removing barriers and persisting to graduation. Other responsibilities include assisting the Project Director in the development, implementation and monitoring of program recruitment and retention strategies.

Specific Responsibilities

• Conduct information sessions and one-on-one counseling to students and their families concerning the Gateway to College program requirements.

• Assist the Project Director in the coordination of program outreach, intake, evaluation and orientation processes.

• Collaborate with school district, relevant city offices and community groups to identify and implement referral processes for potential students.

• Provide an exhaustive set of academic and social-emotional supports for students to ensure program retention and student success.

• Maintain ongoing and consistent contact with students and their families regarding student progress, attendance and behavioral issues, etc.

• Assist in the development of program materials and forms specific to program operation and student data tracking.

• Coordinate and facilitate the delivery of academic, social-emotional and career-related activities for program students.

• Actively participate in all Gateway events such as graduation, student social events, student achievement celebrations, program orientations, community service activities, etc.

• Assist the Project Director in facilitating presentations to internal and external audiences to promote the program.

• Monitor student progress, review academic records and provide support to students to ensure academic progress, program retention and completion, and daily attendance while maintaining accurate and updated case files at all times.

• Prepare and maintain reports and appropriate documentation per program requirements and objectives.

• Communicate with College offices and external social service/academic agencies to explain program requirements and address individual student progress or needs.

• Adhere to FERPA regulations as they pertain to maintaining the security and confidentiality of all student records, as well as maintain the confidentiality of other documents on behalf of the program and the College.

• Maintain sensitivity, understanding and respect for a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological and ethnic backgrounds.

• Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with the mission, goals, and core values of the College.

• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology, Social Science, Counseling or related field required.

• Two (2) years direct experience working with at-risk youth (16-21 years old) in an educational or social service environment required.

• Experience assessing student needs and coordinating educational and community-based services for the purposes of student support required.

• Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills required.

• Ability to organize data, maintain case files and prepare reports required.

• Strong organization and planning skills required.

• Demonstrated ability to collaborate and build program partnerships with internal and external constituents required.

• Strong computer skills, including proficiency using MS Word and Excel required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a related field preferred.
Any and all degree(s) must be from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

• Experience assessing student in a community college environment preferred.

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with “off-track to graduation” (over-aged/undfer credited) populations preferred.
