The Resource Sharing Librarian is primarily responsible for the overall management of the University Libraries’ interlibrary loan (ILL) and document delivery services and also supports resource licensing to improve and maintain inter-institutional resource sharing and ILL workflows. This position reports to the Head, Resource Licensing & Delivery.



  • Manages all aspects of borrowing, lending, record-keeping and delivery of materials from reciprocal partners, including the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA), the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL), and others;
  • Directly supervises a staff of four full-time classified employees engaged in ILL borrowing, ILL lending, and document delivery services;
  • Manages implementations of software used to in providing document delivery and ILL services – including OCLC’s ILLiad and Odyssey systems, RAPID, BSCAN-ILL, and Occam’s Reader; maintains current knowledge of system updates and changes;
  • Monitors processes and workflows to develop and recommend improvements and updates;
  • Evaluates and recommends new technology and services that could improve processes and workflow and/or provide cost-savings and actively assists in implementation when new technologies or services are adopted;
  • Actively promotes the services offered through the department;
  • Maintains positive working relationships with the University’s resource sharing partners in VIVA, ASERL, the Center for Research Libraries (CRL), and others;
  • Serves on appropriate library, university, and external committees and working groups;
  • Maintains knowledge of current national and international interlibrary loan codes and best practices, and monitors emerging trends that affect interlibrary loan services;
  • Maintains awareness of current and evolving scholarly communications trends as they relate to inter-institutional resource sharing and ILL and document delivery services;
  • Oversees fiscal activities relating to ILL, and prepares accurate statistics and reports in a timely manner;
  • Supports management of negotiated licensing terms for content in library systems relevant to resource sharing and ILL operations;
  • Fulfills other function and duties as assigned that fall within the scope of a member of the library faculty;
  • Engages in university and professional service, research, and creative work as outlined in the George Mason University Librarians’ Handbook.


Required Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science OR an equivalent certified foreign degree;
  • Experience providing interlibrary loan or document delivery services;
  • Knowledge of ILL codes, standards and policies – including copyright compliance;
  • Strong service orientation;
  • Ability to build collaborative and mutually beneficial working relationships with people of varying backgrounds;
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and growth; and
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Successful supervisory experience;
  • Working knowledge of OCLC’s ILLiad and Odyssey systems;
  • Knowledge of scholarly communication trends and inter-institutional resource sharing; and
  • Candidates with substantial paraprofessional experience in ILL/document delivery will be given consideration.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, rank; not less than $60,000/year.
